I'm a freelance political reporter with bylines in VICE, the Daily Beast and newspapers in Michigan and North Dakota. I've written long feature stories on politicians, dispatches on the latest in Congress and written essays and fiction to boot.
When I work with students young and old, my biggest goal is to get them to see their writing in a new, exciting light. No matter what we're working on — a cover letter, a short story or a term paper — I like helping writers see more than one way they can show the world their big ideas.
I graduated from Central Michigan University in 2013 with a B.A. in English, and soon after began working for MLive, one of Michigan's largest statewide news outlets. In 2015, I moved to North Dakota to take a job with the state's biggest newspaper syndicate, and soon became one of its foremost political and investigative reporters, winning awards for reports on the state attorney general and the 2018 U.S. Senate race.
I've since written about that same Senate race for VICE, where I also covered water contamination in Michigan, and I've written for the Daily Beast about a long-shot run by a gay North Dakotan for statewide office — a big step for the state I lived in for years.
I have ample experience working with college students from my days as a university writing mentor at Central Michigan, and I now tutor refugee children and mentor middle schoolers in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I report on national news stories in North Dakota, Michigan and beyond. My work has appeared in VICE, the Daily Beast, and more.
I covered North Dakota’s senators and at-large congressman in Washington, D.C. as well as state and local political trends. Chief among my 2018 duties was coverage of North Dakota’s U.S. Senate race for the largest chain of newspapers in the state.
My writing has included an investigation into the governor’s travel schedule, a grant-funding investigation that parsed 15,000 pages of emails and a political profiles on a range of state leaders — from U.S. Senate candidates to the North Dakota attorney general.
Reported in Bay City, MI, on breaking news and Bay County government. Significant stories included award-winning local coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 gay marriage ruling.
Sam is great to work with! He’s very knowledgeable and encouraging, and I felt a lot better about my writing after each of our sessions. Would recommend!
