- Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Hello! In my four years at the Juilliard School I have taken rigorous ear training courses. I saved every exercise and will approach these lessons much in the same way Juilliard's fine teachers do.
Many people go about Ear Training the wrong way- for instance- many people rely on memorization and process of elimination to confirm what they're hearing. Through my lesson plan, you will learn how to hear as instinct, rather than through these mental processes.
Soon enough, you'll be identifying the pitch of every car horn you hear in NY (believe me it's a blessing and a curse, mostly a blessing)

- Teaching since:
Hello! I'm Sam and I'm a graduate of the Juilliard School. I'm a huge music nerd and teaching is one of my biggest passions. For eight years, I have been teaching students of various ages and backgrounds, compiling lesson plans designed to work with students at ALL LEVELS. As a prominent NYC based jazz trombonist/bandleader/composer, I am more than qualified to teach any student.
I have given numerous masterclasses, workshops, lessons and group lessons in everything from classical trombone technique to jazz history. I offer fun, cohesive lessons catered to your ability in the following subjects:
--Trombone (jazz and/or classical, beginning to advanced)
--Jazz Harmony (any instrument [bass, piano, drums, guitar, etc.] beginning to advanced)
--Piano lessons (beginning to intermediate)
--Music Theory and/or AP Music Theory prep (any instrument, beginning to advanced)
--Ear Training (any instrument, beginning to advanced)
--Arranging/Composition (any instrument, beginning to advanced
--Songwriting (any instrument, beginning to advanced)
*Since I charge the same rate for each of these subjects, many of my students request to split the lesson time into 2 or more subjects
If you have any questions about my specific lesson plans for a particular subject, please don't be afraid to shoot me an email!

ok Sam is fantastic!
the connection was a little weird at first but it was on my end I think because the second I moved to my living room it was steady. Rather than find a local teacher I just figured to see if I could find someone affordable online, and wow, he also went to Juiliard!
6 out of 5!
I'm so lucky I found Sam! I used to play piano and was hoping to brush up on technique, learn jazz chords/harmony, and play along improvising with a jazz soloist. Getting a Juilliard trained musician for this price is a STEAL, I highly recommend.
I bounced around with a few other teachers who had flashy profiles, but none of them had as thorough, personalized, or challenging of an approach as Sam. He was so quick to diagnose my mistakes and had a way of making the trombone fun rather than frustrating (imagine that!!)
Had one lesson - he is very patient and encouraging . subsequent lessons were not possible due to inability to connect electronically and his busy schedule ... it was not worth trying to figure out when to have a class since regularity was not a priority it seemed. sorry to say. Wish him all the best in his performances and professional life,Show More
my first lesson went very well. Awesome teacher.
My skype lesson with Sam was one of the most insightful musical experiences I've had in regards to educating myself about the craft of trombone playing. Not only is his remarkable prowess at the instrument itself apparent but his knowledge of musical harmony and overall artistry allows all of his expert advice to come full circle and become even more impactful. His teaching style was incredibly supportive and effective and with clear and concise input I feel like I can very easily implement the information he gave me into my own playing. From the nuances of trombone technique to the intricacies of complex musical harmonies and progressions, Sam is more than capable of instructing students of all ages and skill levels. I would absolutely recommend Sam to anybody who wants to study music/trombone seriously or even is just getting started and wants to build a strong foundation. I can't wait until my next online lesson!Show More
Sam is a fabulous trombone teacher and player! In our lessons, he is really good at assessing what I can and can’t do and then building lessons to address those skills. As a teacher, he is very fun and down-to-earth while also having high standards and being willing to challenge me.Show More
