When I got my first drum kit at age 13, I hadn't set out to take drum lessons in person, I just wanted to play in a band and that was it. My dad had other plans, and when he surprised me with my first kit, he had also signed me up to start taking lessons from a local teacher once a week. I didn't question it and I'm thankful to this day he did that. Within a short period of time I was reading and playing charts to my favorite songs(red hot chili peppers-under the bridge, being the first.) The most important thing I got from my teacher was someone to springboard ideas to, someone to answer my questions along the way, and to make sure I kept picking up the sticks and playing.

The best teachers are the ones who know each student is different and can adapt throughout a lesson to what the moment calls for. My lessons are goal oriented, and each student may have very different goals. Whether you choose me as your teacher or not, I want to say welcome to the drumming community, congratulations on choosing the coolest instrument and most importantly, have fun!

About Sal M.

Born and raised and still living in Brooklyn, New York, I started playing music at a very young age but it wasn't till I was 13 that I started playing drums. My dad bought me a drum set, signed me up for some lessons, and I never looked back. Before long I was auditioning for music schools, received a full scholarship to Brooklyn College's Conservatory of Music and touring the country with bands on drums. Now 32 years old, with a 4 year old son myself, my passion and progress on the drums continues to grow.

The thing I love most about teaching is how much I learn from every student. Every student has their own unique road blocks and challenges to overcome and to get past each hurdle doesn't always require a one size fits all approach. There are some great drummers that aren't the best teachers, and some great teachers that aren't necessarily the best drummers.

When I started playing the drums I mainly played in punk rock bands and continue to do so till this day. My love for music extends much farther than rock, however, and as I've gotten older my music taste has much less to do with genre and more to do with whether or not a song speaks to my soul.

In fact, for example, if you tell me during our lessons your favorite music is metal, or indie, or hip hop, or whatever, don't be surprised if we start learning jazz or another genre outside your comfort zone. Just like working out, when you're challenged is when you make great progress.
