Teaching private singing lessons. Having trained in voice level singing for over two years I commenced teaching this year. I diagnose the voice type of my students and help them achieve a balanced tone across the whole range of their voice with a healthy mix of head and chest resonance. This is achieved through exercises and vocal cues, enabling students to recognize the sensations that lead to good use of the voice.

I teach violin from beginners to advanced. The violin is a technically demanding instrument and requires good use of the body in order to achieve a good level of proficiency. I therefore incorporate elements of the alexander technique into my teaching so that students can build their violin technique upon a foundation that ensures that playing the instrument will not result in any pain or tension. With the younger students I teach, we learn this foundational technique and how to take care of the body while playing. For students who enjoy creative expression, we explore the different sounds and timbre the violin can make and composition. I also incorporate music theory, as well as how to play fun songs with a backing track.

Tower Hamlets Music Service

This role involved teaching groups of up to 20 children general musicianship skills and how to play the recorder. Lessons involved warm up games, songs, pitch awareness through song games and working with voice, learning to read note values, rhythm and reading notes for the recorder. Emphasis on working with popular songs and jazz styles that would appeal to key stage two pupils.

Private Piano Teacher

In my approach I teach rigorous foundational piano technique from the beginning, along with general musicianship. I like to incorporate teaching of general musical concepts, while encouraging creativity and imagination with the younger pupils that I teach. I also incorporate adaptations of popular music that children like to hear and play and try to stay responsive to the musical tastes of the student- while maintaining high standards in technique from beginners to advanced. I also address postural awareness and incorporate elements of the alexander technique into my teaching.

DaCapo West London

This post required training for the Da Capo teaching method for younger children, an innovative approach which incorporates all the ways in which children learn; visual, auditory and kinesthetic. I assisted the teacher in a range of activities in each lesson, including movement, use of pictures and songs, use of percussion instruments and hand signs to indicate pitch, tempo and dynamics.

In both these roles I taught piano to primary school aged children. I incorporated an emphasis on foundational technique on piano as well as general musicianship. I was responsible for maintaining records and lesson plans for each pupil, as well as undertaking regular training to ensure high standards within each music service and to ensure the safety of the children. I entered pupils for exams and assessed their progress over the year, giving feedback to their parents and the heads of the music and arts support services. All my students received the first class grade of distinction in their exams. I also trained and prepared students for concerts at the end of each school year. In my role at North Herts Music Service, I taught primary as well as secondary level students up to grade 8 standard, providing training for advanced exams and preparing students for university level and further pedagogical training on piano. In this role, similar to the above, I was responsible for planning each lesson within the context of an over arching plan extending throughout each term and through the year in order to ensure steady progress and maintain high standards of teaching. I attended training for this role as well as being regularly assessed. I also taught adult piano lessons for the North Herts music service. My adult pupils’ feedback was very positive.

Teaching General Music skills, as specified by the national curriculum. My lesson planning was informed by national UK curriculum guidelines, incorporating my own ideas. I ran the school choir and taught every year in the school, tailoring my teaching to different ages- nursery (Age 3/4) up to 11 years of age. I also helped prepare the children for countywide music concerts. To support this position, I undertook regular training to develop my teaching skills further. Teaching at the Dominie School, I taught general musicianship skills in a school for children with learning difficulties. My lesson planning was informed by national curriculum guidelines, but I incorporated my own ideas as this position required flexibility in order to tailor to the needs of individual children. I also ran the school choir.
