Robert "Gary" was born in Detroit, started playing guitar at the age of 12, and at 14 began playing bass as well. He has continued to play both for 40 years. Growing up Gary’s mom was a talented amateur pianist and loved jazz, and his stepfather was a country music DJ so his home was filled with music. Gary’s influences early on included Jazz players like Ray Brown, Jaco Pastorius, Ron Carter, Eddie Gomez, and R&B players like James Jamerson and Chuck Rainey. On guitar Gary was influenced by Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, Joe Pass, and Johnny Smith as well as Bluesmen like B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy and many others. As a kid Gary played in Pop and Rock bands but was lucky enough to have an older friend that worked at a Blues Club in Ft. Lauderdale so he got to listen to a lot of Blues in the early 60's. Being exposed to so many styles and genres of music, it is not surprising that Gary’s musical resume includes, Jazz, Blues, R&B, Oldies, Big Band, Show Tunes and more. Gary’s love of music led him to The University of Miami where he earned a Bachelors degree in Jazz Performance and a Masters in Jazz teaching. Gary has performed with top artists such as Peter Ponzol, Dick Hyman, Don Friedman, Alann Harris, The Boca Jazz Rats Big Band, Terry Wilson, Patty Wicks, Billy Marcus, Mitch Woods, Ben E King, The Coasters, J.P. Soars and The Redhots, Terry Hanck, the Bobby Nathan Band, and more. Until recently, Gary was bassist for the 2009 International Blues Challenge winning band J.P. Soars and the Redhots, Gary is also an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at Florida Atlantic University and continues to play locally. *** Lesson Details *** A music lesson with me is, first, an enjoyable experience. While I am goal oriented I believe in keeping the music lesson a relaxed experience. This doesn't mean that I don't expect a student to do his or her best. I do, but , I feel that music should be enjoyable and something that a student looks forward to doing. In the course of our lessons, we will study, in no particular order, technique, theory, rhythm, melody, and any other things that you as a student feel that you would like to learn. We will learn to play and perform pieces of music that I feel all students should know and also whatever pieces of music that you want to learn. The lessons are roughly half what I know that you need to learn and the other half what you want to learn. For example, we might spend the first half of the lesson working on how to read and count rhythms and the second half on learning improvisation, slap bass techniques, chord melodies, or a tune of your choice. There are many possibilities. Part of a teacher's job is evaluating a student's abilities and then strengthening the students weak spots and reinforcing the abilities that the student already has. From my many years teaching and playing I have gotten quite good at doing this and would love to have the opportunity to help you achieve your musical goals in a relaxed atmosphere. *** Studio Equipment *** Home studio: basses, guitars, amps *** Travel Equipment *** I have amps, music stands, etc. *** Specialties *** Guitar and Bass: beg to adv Specializing in Jazz but not limited to that. I have played and taught all styles of music.

Dynamite Robert has been a great instructor. I've known a lot of people in my life, but Robert is among the sharpest. He's one of the most fantastic teachers, and I look forward to continuing my lesson progress with him.

Daniels Mother Hi Robert, we would also like to find out how to add voice lessons to our weekly lessons. Daniel wants to continue his guitar lessons and we are also getting him a base guitar so he can learn this with you as well. How can we add these?:
