About Robert M.

Welcome! My name is Rob and I am professional cellist, string music educator and conductor in the DC Area. I've been playing cello for over 20 years and I have taught various age groups in public school and private studio settings for over 10 years in Indiana, Philadelphia and Washington DC areas.

I hold a Bachelor of Music Education from DePaul University (2010) and a Masters of Music in String Pedagogy from Temple University. I am certified K-12 instrumental/general music teacher in the state of Virginia. Currently, I am an orchestra director in Fairfax County Public Schools, I perform locally and teach from my home studio in Arlington.

I love to engage my students (of all ages) in various ways and find how they learn the best. Most importantly, having fun and working through the learning process! My philosophy is that we never stop learning! I consider myself a student always learning from my own students!

I look forward to offering my musical expertise and experience working with you to grow musically, technically and to reach your goals!!

Rob is a terrific teacher. He covers the fundamentals which my son really needed even though he'd been playing for several years before he started with Rob. Highly recommend.

He is an awesome tutor, and I learn a lot from this lesson. Unlike my previous tutor, he uses his cello to demonstrate things. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who wants to improve at playing the cello.

I appreciated Robert's clear laying out of discussion for expectations, goals, strategies etc. for lessons. He went out of the way to make me feel comfortable and was very attentive to the lesson.

Robert is great. Professional, knowledgeable, and puts the student at ease. Tailors the lesson to the student's individual needs. Robert is flexible as well when life happens and you need to reschedule.

Rob is very knowledgable with regard to the cello--he and my 16 year old son hit it off immediately! He asked my son what he wanted to work on and then they spent the next 45 minutes working on those things. After the lesson, we worked out a continuing schedule of classes for the next few months. We are very happy with Rob as a tutor for my son and equally happy with TakeLessons!

Rob is a great teacher. I hired him to help me play a song at a friend's wedding, having not played cello in years. He had some really helpful tricks up his sleeve to help reinforce the things we went over in each lesson, like bow technique and posture.
Rob was also very flexible in terms of what we focused on at each lesson. Working with him, it's easy to tell that cello and teaching are both passions of his.

Rob is clearly very happy teaching strings, and his enthusiasm is contagious. My 15 year old really looks forward to her weekly lessons with him. In addition to his dedication and talent as a teacher, Rob is prompt and organized.
