About Rick S.
I have over 15 years experience teaching private lessons and 5 years experience teaching at a local music store. I played in the jazz combos and big bands at Kansas State University for 3 years and participated in their tours of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Costa Rica. I'm an active player on the local scene and my debut CD, Last Call, is available on Amazon.com.
Jazz guitarists I'm heavily influenced by include Grant Green, Jim Hall, Pat Martino, Django Reinhardt, Kenny Burrell, and Joshua Breakstone. I also listen to a lot of non-guitarists like Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and Paul Desmond.
*** Lesson Details ***
A typical first lesson will be spent assessing your playing and looking for ways to improve. I work with all levels of students, and I believe in taking you wherever you're at and making you stronger. Some great materials to have are William Leavitt's Modern Method, a Hal Leonard Real Book, and any of the Aebersold volumes. I find vols 54 and 70 are especially great introductory ones.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Fender Blues Junior
Gibson ES-175
Gibson ES-335
Epiphone Les Paul
Ibanez ASR-70
*** Specialties ***
I teach all styles, but my specialty is jazz and jazz/music theory. I'm a strong believer in developing practical and working knowledge, and applying lesson material to real gigging situations.
