About Richard M.
I am a professional pianist, violinist and keyboard player for decades and have performed and recorded in classical, jazz, rock, popular, and sacred settings. i bring this variety of performing experience to my teaching.
I have been teaching private violin and piano students for over 30 years. I also was a college instructor in Music and Audio Production for 16 years and am very familiar with current Music and Audio technology. I try to use this as much as I can in my private teaching. I am currently a substitute teacher in the Gwinnett County Schools
I have Master's and Bachelor's degree's in Music from the Indiana University School of Music(One of the country's top rated music schools. Go Hoosiers!). I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowling Green State University where I studied English, Violin Performance, and Journalism I also studied violin performance at the Oberlin Conservatory.
I am currently a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and the Georgia Music Education Association (GMEA) and encourage my students to participate in these events. I also compose music and am a member of the American Composer' Forum.
In my teaching I take a student/learning centered approach in which the student learning through activity is central to the lesson. With young students I supplement standard method books with a variety of extra classical, popular, movie, and gaming themes. I have also acquired a number of fun worksheets, games, and music education software which help the students with music theory.
With adults I always try to help them with music in which they are interested. Because my Music Majors were in jazz studies I also teach improvisation, theory, and composition to students who are interested in it.
In my experience students learn best when the lessons enjoyable and fun. I expect all students to make progress on their instruments, but I always try to create a relaxed but productive atmosphere tailored to each student's particular abilities and interests
