A native of West Seattle, Rian took his first piano lessons at the age of seven. His middle school music teacher recognized Rian’s musical talent and gave him his first public performance opportunity during the school’s annual musical. Rian would go on to play piano for the middle school productions for 3 more years. As Rian progressed into high school his talent increased as well. As a freshman in high school Rian successfully tried-out for the award winning JFK High School Jazz Band and soon took over as the primary pianist. While performing at a high school jazz band festival he was singularly awarded the “Best Rhythm Section” award, a prize usually given to a band’s entire rhythm section. Rian concluded his high school musical career with a trip to the Washington Music Educators Association Solo & Ensemble Competition (WMEA) after achieving a 1+ Superior rating for Solo Piano Performance.

Pursuing his passion for music, Rian attended Washington State University (WSU) and studied under the tutelage of Julliard alums Jeffrey and Karen Savage. During his time at WSU, he expanded his boundaries and became accomplished in his study of classical piano, earning gold medals in multiple years at Musicfest Northwest. In addition, Rian performed as a soloist with the Washington-Idaho Symphony as a winner in their Young Artist Competition. Prior to his senior year at WSU, Rian received the Presser Scholarship. The Presser scholarship is a nationally funded scholarship awarded by each University to only one student each year. The Presser Scholarship represents the highest level of academic achievement in the United States.

Following graduation from WSU in 2010, Rian began teaching piano and working as a freelance musician in Seattle. Rian joined the staff of the Ballard Academy of Music and Dance as a piano instructor in addition to working as an accompanist for several local churches, high schools and music schools.

Rian’s passion for playing, teaching, and learning about music has taken him throughout the Pacific Northwest and parts of the east coast of the United States. Besides his work as an accompanist and teacher, he also maintains an active presence in the Seattle music community, frequently volunteering at local events and serving as Secretary of the Seattle Music Teachers Association. As an educator, Rian understands the value of continued learning and has conducted independent study with Randy Halbersadt, jazz professor from Cornish College of the Arts, as well as studying classical technique privately under World-Renowned Pianist-Teacher Peter Mack.

Rian became a Licensed Simply Music Teacher in 2013.

Rian is a great teacher. When he needs to correct you, he does it gently, and it doesn't make you feel like you have done something wrong. He teaches from a set of books that is very precise, and so would be a fantastic fit for younger students.

rian is a good teacher

he is the only piano teacher i have had. i was teaching myself piano and was given some lessons as a gift, and i chose him somewhat randomly from the teachers listed on takelessons dot com. i had several lessons from him and he gave me lots of good ideas. i would have continued with him, but for circumstances out of my control. i would recommend him as a teacher. he has lots of experience and can tailor his teaching depending on what you want to do

Rian is patient which is what I needed. He makes you feel comfortable and has a low key way of pointing out areas for improvement without offending.Would recommend him to others who want to play piano, regardless of how old you are.
