Learn exercises, scales and songs, based on what you know and what you want to play!
Hi! I'm Rachel! I have a Bachelor's in Music Education from CSULA where I was taught scales and to play from Alfred's Group Piano for Adults book 1. I am also working on my Masters in Commercial Music (also from CSULA) where I recently took a Jazz, Pop, and Rock Piano course that focused on advanced exercises and popular songs from different genres. I learned some really fun songs and tricks from this class that I'd love to share with you! At Encore School of Music (where I currently work), I have subbed for quite a few piano students. The students and I would get to know each other a bit, talk about their curriculum and what their teacher wanted us to focus on, the student would play the piece and I would give them feedback. 9 out of 10 times it was rhythm they struggled with. I love teaching rhythm! I have an abundance of music theory sheets that are meant for kids! I even have my own sheets I made to make it easier! These work for both adults and kids! I can teach you Beginning Piano from Level 1a & up (according to the Alfred's books) or we can take a different approach and learn what you want when you want it! I have done both methods before. Feel free to reach out and ask me any questions you may have! I will do my best to answer you as quickly and as honestly as possible. Thank you for your time! :)
About Rachel S.

Hello! My name is Rachel. I am a singer, songwriter, vocal and beginning piano coach, and all around performer. I have been singing since before I could talk. I have been in many musicals and plays and have also played a lead role multiple times. I have been in voice lessons since my freshman year of high school and I have been in advanced ensembles since the same time as well. I am a soprano with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from CSULA. I have been teaching beginning piano and voice since January 2017. Before Covid hit, I used to work at the YMCA KidZone in Fullerton and I was in an R&B/Funk band as a backup singer and occasional soloist. I am currently working on my Masters in Commercial Music, also from CSULA. I sing and teach all styles, including but not limited to pop, rock, jazz, R&B, musical theater, classical singing, and opera. About me as a teacher, the owner of San Marino Music Center, John Axume, says, “Rachel takes the time to develop individualized lesson plans to maximize each student’s unique potential and strengthen each student’s unique weakness”. One of the first things I'll ask you is "What kind of music do you like?" which will help us choose your first song (or two) and "What are your goals in music?" which will help us stay focused on what you want to accomplish when it comes to your learning. I emphasize healthy technique and I can offer you musicianship skills to help you in your journey with music as well! Lastly, as a songwriter, I have helped a few of my students to write and finish their own songs! I am more than happy to teach you about how music works and how music can work for you! I am friendly and patient, so if you have any questions, please let me know! I hope to see you soon! Sincerely, Rachel Schlenz Ruiz
