How long does this course take?
It depends what level you start out at. If you're an absolute beginner and want to complete ALL beginner lessons to become an intermediate player, you will take between 30-40 lessons. If you want to continue, an Intermediate course is then offered.

If you start in the middle (after showing me you can play basic beginner stuff), you'll take around 20-30 beginner course lessons. Advanced beginners will take around 10-20 beginner course lessons. If you want to continue, an Intermediate course is then offered.

What does an actual lesson look like?
The very first lesson will be an introduction. Depending on what level you start at will determine what exactly we go over. If you're an absolute beginner, we'll go over the Intro to Guitar lesson packet and then 3 Major Chords packet; where you'll start playing chords, finger exercises and songs!

If you're mid or advanced, you'll need to demonstrate to me you understand the intro to guitar packet as well as many lesson packets we can get through until we reach your perfect starting point.

From then on, the lesson will start with a review of the previous lesson where you'll demonstrate what you learned and if we need to continue working on it, we will. If not, we'll then move on to the next, new lesson packet.

Not every student gets through 1 lesson packet every lesson. It varies depending on how much you already know and how much you practice between lessons.

Wait...so I get personal help outside of class?
That's right! I talk with people 1-on-1 to help clear up any questions or confusions that come with learning guitar. During office hours, of course!

What do I need to start lessons?
The 3 main things you'll need is a guitar, guitar picks and a guitar tuner or app. I can help you pick out some awesome equipment if needed! Later on, you'll need a guitar capo and extra strings.

Can someone take the class with me?
Yes! I can teach groups of 2-5 people and would offer $5 off per person per lesson.

What if I can't make a class?
That's ok! If you let me know within 24 hours of the class we can easily reschedule and you won't get charged.

Can kids take your lessons?
Yes, ages 7 and up.

What happens after I purchase lessons?
I'll send you a New Student Packet as soon as I can that will include a detailed syllabus, an equipment suggestions list w/ specific brand recommendations (that fits every budget), and the private lessons agreement. And before our very first lesson, I will contact you to set up an initial meeting to go over everything and to make sure it's a fit.

How much do I need to practice?
I highly suggest 5-6 days a week, 30 min or more each day. With 1-2 rest days. If that's too much due to your schedule, 3-5 days, 30 min or more would suffice. I go over why and how to practice and can help you write out practice schedules.

Can you read music?
Yes, I can and will teach you the basics of reading music and music theory; even though these aren't necessary to learn and be good at guitar.

What if I want to stop lessons?
No biggie! I would just remove you from my student roster and Take Lessons will refund you for whatever lessons are left in your account.

Do you offer performance opportunities for students?
Yes, I offer students opportunities to go to open mics with me and would let them know about gig/show offers when I come across them. I also do all-ages open mics for people under 18 to play.

Am I too old to learn guitar?
Determination and heart are stronger factors than age when learning guitar. Most of my best students are adults 45 and up.

Do you teach electric guitar or just acoustic?
I can teach you on an electric guitar but won't be able to help too much with pedals and effects.

What's an absolute beginner?
You have no knowledge or experience with playing guitar.

What's a mid-beginner?
You have limited knowledge and experience. You may know a few chords and can keep up with a song or two.

What's an advanced beginner?
You know a good amount of chords and about the guitar. You can play some songs. You understand some theory but want to take your playing to an intermediate level.

What happens at the end of the beginners course?
You will take a Beginners Test which has a written portion and practical portion. The test covers important topics from each lesson packet and important chords you'll need to have memorized. If you get an 85% or higher, you can then move on to the Intermediate Course.

Ages 7+

Teaching since:
August 2016

I started playing guitar and singing when I was 13 when I got a Christmas present from my father. Learning covers for a few years, I eventually started writing my own music around age 16. I also competed in talent shows and sang at church during high school. When I was 18, my friends and I started a jam band.

Went through a couple drummers then went our separate ways not even a year in. Since then, I’ve been playing as a solo musician but also playing in worship bands. I also have had opportunities to duet with people live sporadically. From 2011-2012, I recorded an album entitled “Wouldlawn, Couldlawn, Shouldlawn.” I named it that because I lived in an area called Woodlawn and my dad used to say the album’s title as a joke.

This was all in my spare time, I was a waitress since age 19. I didn’t start playing music full time until late 2013. Playing mostly in small bars, coffeehouses, and private events/parties. And in August 2016, I started teaching guitar. Took a total break from playing music.

To get back into the groove of things, I started my own by doing online concerts. I also started recording music videos for and doing social media lives.

I also:

> Absolutely love salsa and could eat it at every meal
> Really despise being tickled
> Was born, raised and still reside in Maryland
> Love animals more than people
> Like the color "pillager purple"
> Love rose gold
> Still have the same guitar tuner from when I was 13 (and it still works)

I still teach guitar and I’m blessed to be playing in the worship band at The Cause Church in Elkridge, MD. I also play in the Spanish ministry on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month; and at the Elkridge Spanish market (w/ the ministry team) the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. I also hold online workshops on Saturdays I'm not playing. I gig about once a month at coffeehouses.

My style is indie folk; and I play a mix of originals and covers. My main singing influences are Gwen Stefani, Karen O from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Fiona Apple. My main music influences are Death Cab for Cutie, The White Stripes & Modest Mouse.

I have only had one lesson with Rachel so far but I can already tell I made the best decision in selecting her as my instructor. She is very organized and has a clear plan for progression, starting with a deep understanding of the basics - posture, hand position, reading music, and music theory - then goes deeper into topics as you progress. What I also like that Rachel provides clear practice goals and exercises. Rachel is a top notch instructor.

Got my headstrong 10 year old daughter to love learning the guitar and look forward to her lessons. Adapted to a crazy schedule that allowed my daughter to continue her lessons online all the way in Tennessee. Rachel is amazing.

Rachel does an amazing job preparing each lessons material and uses a variety of media to make the weeks class easily understandable and accessible. Ours are completed online and I find it easy to learn and enjoy regardless of not being conducted in person. Rachel also finds ways to make the lessons fun and enjoyable through interaction. Highly recommended!
