Rachel M. is a performing pianist, composer, adjudicator, clinician, church musician, and teacher. Her students have won many competitions and some have gone on to become respected musicians at prestigious colleges and religious institutions. Dr. M. teaches at Macomb community college and at her home studio in Troy, Michigan. While she upholds high standards for her students, Dr. M. believes in respecting the individual needs and unique qualities of each one. Students learn a mixture of classical and popular music and are introduced to the fundamentals of music theory and improvisation/ composition. Dr. M. offers a variety of performance opportunities for students. As a member of NFMC, MTNA, the Vivace Music Club and the American Guild of Music, she regularly enters children in a variety of competitions if that is what they choose to do. As a clinician, Dr. M.has given several lectures around the state on the Taubman approach to piano technique. Dr. M. is one of only 2 or 3 pianists within the state of Michigan to have worked one on one with the late Dorothy Taubman, considered by many to be the world’s leading expert on the prevention and healing of music related hand injuries as well as a master coach of leading concert pianists. (see New York Times article) As a performer, Dr. M. plays regularly with the Macomb Symphony and has also given numerous recitals in the United States and abroad. She has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Macomb Symphony, Southfield youth symphony and the Grinnell Orchestra. In the last five years, Dr. M. decided to write down some of “those tunes that are always running through my head.” To date she has written about 40 compositions, some of which have been performed at local churches. Stay tuned. This has been an exciting development for her students, some of whom have their own compositional aspirations.
