About Phyllis H.
I hold a Masters Degree in Music from George Mason University.
A native of the Washington DC Metropolitan area, I have performed with the Washington Opera Company, at the Kennedy Center, and Historic Maryland's Adventure Theatre. New York City credits include performances off-Broadway for the York Theatre Company, CAP21, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
I have been a vocal teacher in Brooklyn, New York, in addition to coaching students privately. Previously, I taught at the Virginia Institute of the Performing Arts, was Musical Director for The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia's Music and Drama Camp and The Snow Camp Historical Drama Society. I have also taught in Prince William County and Stafford County Virginia Schools and served as a judge for the VTA Middle School One-Act play Competition, VCDA District IX Choral Festival, and the Stafford County Choral Society Scholarship competition. In 2008, I served on the production staff as musical director at the Astors' Beechwood Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island.

*** Lesson Details ***
Not only am I a trained singer, I am also an actor. I understand what it is to communicate and show emotion while singing. Before you can do this, you must also learn healthy singing technique. I will help blend the two.
The first half of each lesson will be dedicated to vocal exercises with the second half to songs I recommend or from your own repertoire. My recommendations may be from a different style of music than you are accustomed to, but I will be working towards helping you sing the style you want to sing.
Every voice is different. As a teacher I want to make sure that my students understand and are comfortable with what they are feeling and hearing. While I am an easy going person, I work very hard to help students find the right path to healthy vocal production.
*** Travel Equipment ***
n/a student must have piano in home for use by the teacher
*** Specialties ***
***please note: I have 3 cats. They do not come into the studio, but if you have allergies, this is possibly a problem.

Teaching since 2001
MA Music from George Mason University
Very personable and unintimidating to a beginner. Easy to follow her teaching.
Phyllis is the best singing teacher I have ever had. She is completely knowledgeable about technique and personalizes each class for her students. Phyllis is so sweet, and believes that there is a singing voice inside of all of us. Since I have started taking lessons with her, my range has expanded and not only that, I have gained new knowledge about sheet music that I had never heard before. I would highly recommend choosing her as your teacher.
I think she is an amazing teacher and she is teaching me so much. I think that she is going to make me better than ever and is going to make me have a good audition ability.
ANYONE CAN SING!
Phyllis can help anyone sing and anyone who can sing she can help you become better!
My son was getting quite the ovation from the older kids for nailing all of his parts not even a week into having the script! We owe this to you for all your excellent teaching!! He has come so far with all your help!
I am 73 and joined a choir with no previous singing experience. Phyllis has been a great help teaching me to sing.
My singing lessons have been very helpful in my attempting to become a better singer. Phyllis tailors the lessons to accommodate near term needs as well as considering the long term goals. Therefore every lesson is unique to some degree. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Makes Singing Fun!
Phyllis makes learning to sing fun. I always leave lessons with a smile and look forward to working with her each week.

Super teacher, Gifted Lady:)
This teacher is terrific with a special needs child, exhibiting tremendous patience and kindness. She's helping a child realize her dream Only wish hourly lessons rates were more reasonable!
Phyllis is a wonderful teacher. She is very enthusiastic and works very well with my daughter. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a voice teacher.
