About Philip L.

(4)
Phil L. began his studies of the guitar at age 13. After just two-years of study, he auditioned and was accepted into the Shortridge School of Performing Arts. As a student there, he was introduced to the classical guitar, music theory, music history, sight-singing, and the keyboard. He performed many recitals during this time as well, as a soloist, and in ensembles, playing classical, jazz and rock. After high school, he auditioned and was accepted into the Ball State University School of Music, receiving the Young Artist Award, which is the highest prize an incoming student can get. After receiving his BM degree, Phil went on to teach at Illinois and Indiana Universities. In 1993 he accepted a position at a prestigious music school in Carmel, Indiana. There he taught hundreds of students of all ages, styles, and levels. In 2000, he won the Judy Goodwin Teacher of the Year award, being the first guitarist to do so. Now Phil teaches from his home in-person lessons as well as online. With inline lessons, students anywhere on the globe can study with him. Some of Phil's music can be heard on Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music. Phil has some of his sheet music published by Bergmann Edition.

My son has taken guitar from Phil for 4 years - first, in-person, and now online during COVID. Phil has made the transition seamless, and has remained flexible to meet any needs we’ve had. He is a low-pressure, easy-going teacher, and always finds music that my son thinks is cool to work on. My son backs away from any activity where he feels pressured to compete, so Phil has met him where he is and lets him be in control of the pace. Phil’s style has ensured that guitar will be a lifelong pastime for my son!

I retired from 25 years in the Air Force and decided to take up my life-long ambition to play the guitar. Phil showed me rock, blues, classical, and fingerstyle techniques. If you want to play it, Phil can teach it. I thoroughly enjoyed our lessons every week.
