I'm a professional guitar player, an Opera Singer and also an experienced and supportive teacher. I will meet your personal goals choosing the right method for your own pace and focus on helping you to develop your artistry. If you want to know more about me just visit paulolapa.com
GUITAR: I have a ten year experience career teaching guitar - privately and throughout official schools - to students of all ages, from curious toddlers to contemplative seniors. Prior to move to the United States, I taught at AMVP Musical Academy (Portugal) where I also got my conservatory degree in Guitar performance. Relying on a fundamental classic technique I can guide you through every musical genre that you wish to approach and enlighten you with the best musical foundation that there is. Whether you want to learn a specific song/repertoire or you want me to guide you trough the keystones of this instrument I will always lookout for your personal satisfaction and development in the process.
I'm a recorded artist with two albums as a member of the AMVP Guitar Orchestra: Contrastes (2003) and Plaisir (2005) and appeared at prestigious venues in Portugal, Saint Peterburg (Russia), Paris (France) and Frankfurt (Germany).
SINGING: My voice studio teaches singers from beginner to advanced levels who are eager to properly use their own voice, master the fundamental notions of a healthy singing technique and how to potentiate themselves as individual artists. If you're preparing for an audition or are just curious about what you can do with your voice, I'll be glad to help you. The process that allowed me to become a professional Opera singer gave me the clear notion that as a student you want to have the balance between clear and accurate concepts and a positive experience.
Because singing was always a passion in my life I also pursued my advanced studies in Classical Voice, and as a result I graduated from Aveiro University (Portugal) in Music and Vocal Performance. My goal as a voice teacher is to help you understand the basic fundamentals of a healthy singing voice: breathing technique, clarity of tone, balance between natural resonators and clear diction - regardless of what genre you're singing. I can also assist you in the proper diction of the romantic languages (Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese).
After completing my studies in Portugal, I moved to Boston where I developed a relationship with the VOICExperience Foundation and the Savannah Voice Festival led by the great Opera legend Sherrill Milnes. While in the United States, I have performed in musical concerts, opera and musical scenes, private performances and outreach events in Savannah, Georgia, New York City, Tampa Bay, Florida and Hilton Head, South Carolina.
In Savannah I've been working regularly - throughout a series of Masterclasses - with a group of teenagers from Bethesda Academy introducing them to the Opera world and showing how to use their own voice and body as a way to fully express themselves.
As an Opera Singer I have performed fully staged operas such as Carmen - Bizet, The Magic Flute and Die Schauspieldirektor - Mozart, Sampiero - Xavier Mignon and Gianni Schicchi - Puccini in Portugal and in the USA.
I perform regularly at private and religious events and throughout my formation I have attended different singing programs like VOICExperience New York: Opera as Drama; Savannah Voice Festival and the International Vocal Program in Aveiro - Portugal
Introduced and guided more than a thousand students to this beautiful musical instrument. Helped them to master a solid technique and let them explore their musical artistry in a variety of genres. In the last five years I also specialized the work with toddlers developing an introductory method to the guitar with appealing and recognizable melodies and teaching them how to schedule and structure their own study.+ Read More
Since 2008 I have been developing my passion for all aspects of the Opera as a performer, production and stage manager and assistant director with Orquestra do Norte Opera Company in Portugal. I have been an integral part of the orchestra's productions at Coliseu do Porto, Teatro de Vila Real, Teatro de Portimão and Óbidos Opera Festival. Working alongside such stage directors as Giulio Ciabatti, Eleonora Paterniti, Ignacio García and Emidio Guidotti, I have been involved i the main titles of the Opera repertoire, such as:
Le nozze di Figaro, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Nabucco, Rigoletto, La traviata, Otello, Carmen, Samson et Dalila, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, Gianni Scchichi and Il Segreto di Susanna.
I was immediately comfortable with Paulo. He helped me so much just in the first lesson. I am beginning to understand how to pronounce the sounds and words which have been a bit more difficult.
Excited to be learning and conversing right away.
Paulo is great, my son really took to him and seems to have the patience for a 7 year old. Good first lesson.
Our son liked the first lesson.
I'm a new singer and the first lesson was really helpful and at the same time not stressful. Paulo was engaging and made it very comfortable. I'm looking forward continuing and learning how to get the most out of my voice.
My first lesson with Paulo was great! He provided great information about the components of singing and even emailed me a document after the lesson with a summary. He was professional, friendly and made me feel very comfortable. I'm looking forward to the next lesson!+ Read More

Paulo is a fantastic teacher and a pleasure to work with. His patience and understanding are admirable and his I could not recommend his talent at a higher level. Thank you Paulo!
I started Portuguese lessons with Paulo because I wanted a native Portuguese speaker as a teacher. What I got was SO much more. Paulo is very passionate about his language, his teaching, and clearly cares whether the student is understanding and assimilating the lessons presented. His training and career as an Opera singer provides him with flawless and beautiful pronunciation that is literally music to my ears. Because of his voice training he can also hear the slightest deviation in my own pronunciation and accent, allowing me to slowly perfect my own Portuguese pronunciation. The lessons are paced well, not too fast, not too slow, and I can vary the pace as I need to. I've studied several languages before and have never enjoyed the process as much as I do with Paulo. Because Paulo is so personable, I'm laughing while learning my way to fluency!+ Read More
The 1st class I was playing and reading music. I have a lot of confidence I will be learning a lot with Paulo. He is kind and very patient. That key!! Also he is so close to my job so I can just meet and play right away. Gracias!
Analyzed a senior, largely self taught fellow. Paulo took me back to the basics during the first lesson in a kind and thoughtful way. Within the first 24 hours, the sounds I produce have already improved. He is smart, musical, and enthusiastic. I'm looking forward to my next lesson!+ Read More
