About Paul W.

I have played the guitar for twenty years and have studied a wide variety of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and rock. I’m skilled in acoustic, electric and classical styles of the guitar. I have an open mind about music and can appreciate any style or type. I have a firm background on music theory, so I am able to explain what I am teaching. I excelled in all my classes in college, music and Gen Eds, with a GPA over 3.75. I also have experience in teaching guitar or bass to students ranging from the ages of six to sixty six. I enjoy taking what I have learned and passing it on to someone else to experience. I believe this is one way you can leave your mark in music. I believe the experience I have playing in bands, and learning songs with my ability of having relative pitch will make my students improve quicker. I am also a very skilled sight reader and can recognize key signatures and musical notation. I’ve also been playing electric bass guitar for 13 years now and have the same skill set as my guitar playing. In fact I am hired to perform more often as a bassist than a guitarist.
I went to Columbia College between 2000-2003 and I completed a Bachelor Arts in Music, Concentration: Instrument Performance.
I also went to Harper College between 1997-2000 and I completed an Associates in Fine Arts of Music.

Learning the guitar or bass is fun! And as your teacher I will make you want to practice.

As a young female, I was apprehensive about choosing a male teacher that teaches in his home. However, Paul has been professional and I have not had any concerns since meeting him and working with him. He is a well-planned, experienced teacher who artfully progresses students from week to week in a manner that is constructive and fun. In only 5 weeks I have learned more about playing guitar and guitar theory than I would have thought. He has been attentive to my goals and it is precisely the experience that I pay for.

I've been with Paul for about 3-4 months. I came to him having a minor in music and a lot of guitar under my belt, but frustrated with my consistency. I did a check in on my abilities recently and I'm able to play pretty much any song in the real book now after 1 or 2 tries. This is great, especially because I don't feel like I'm working that hard. So yeah he's great. I recommend him.

Paul’s experience of the bass and acoustic guitar are so helpful to growing your skills as a musician. He is such a great teacher with patience and clear directions in how to develop as a musician and learn music theory. I’ve learned so much from him in how to play in a band and also writing music.
I already signed up for more lessons!

Paul is an awesome guitar teacher and all around great guy. I clicked with him immediately. His knowledge of music is vast on pretty much any genre. He delivers instruction without any pretense in easy to understand digestible portions. For me, he promoted important fundamental learning principles but custom designed to my skill level and to help me fulfill my personal goals. I give Paul my highest recommendation. You will be glad you took lessons from Paul! I am.

Paul's great. He's been amazing about listen to me and what I want to learn. I'm actually more interested in music theory, and learning about bass than I am interest in becoming proficient at playing. It's obv that not only does Paul play both Bass and Guitar, but he understands theory and he can talk intelligently about different styles.

Overall a really nice upbeat guy too. I was hesitant b/c I didn't want a guitar teacher who also played bass. I wanted a bass teacher, Paul definitely is serious about Bass, and does NOT approach it the same way he does guitar

Paul is really patient, encouraging, and accommodating to my work schedule. At the same time, he is easy to talk to, and I have a lot of fun at all of my lessons! He’s clearly very knowledgeable about guitar and a wide variety of music styles. He listens to my goals and tries to relate his lessons to my interests to keep me engaged. Since I started a couple months ago, I’ve definitely noticed improvement, and he’s given a lot of structure and meaning to my practice sessions. Also, I had been developing some bad habits during my brief time trying to learn guitar myself, so I really appreciate that he points them out and helps set me on the right track. Overall, totally worth it and would recommend him to anybody!

Paul has been teaching guitar to my two sons (17 and 11) since January and they are both very happy with his lessons and his teaching style. They look forward to their lesson and trust him completely, because my sons are starting to see that following Paul's instructions is producing good results. In particular, my sons appreciate Paul's patience and his ability to demonstrate clearly all the necessary steps to improve their playing ability. Paul is very good to adjust his teaching to the needs of his students and, as a fellow teacher myself, I think that is a fundamental characteristic of any good teacher. In conclusion, I feel very confident to recommend Paul, if you are looking for an experienced, patient and very attentive guitar teacher.

By far the best teacher I have ever had. Paul makes lessons engaging, and his wealth of knowledge never comes off as elitist. He explains complicated theory in a practical way for anyone to understand. If I wasn't leaving Chicago I would have signed up for ten more lessons. Ask him about the own music he makes with his band. He's a super talented guy!!!

I've tried to take guitar lessons a few times over the last few years and it's been difficult to find a good Instructor. In my experience the instructors I have found have either been flaky (canceling lessons, changing times last minute, hard to reach, etc...) or their teaching style is difficult to follow (unorganized or confusing). Paul is both very reliable and very organized. He's lessons are easy to follow and I feel like I am moving forward in a way that has purpose. I have not been working with him long but I already see big improvements because what he has me working on makes sense. Paul is also really personable and fun to work with. He is very patient and is the perfect combination of being focused but laid back at the same time. I am really enjoying my lessons with him.

He's not an intimidating or imposing teacher in any way and was ready to meet me right where I was at as a musician from day 1. I had my first class with Paul. The session was amazing, Paul is really good at explaining the details of progressions. He's friendly and gets the class moving in the right direction at the same time so you don't end up getting too bored with instructions or while away the time chatting away(which isn't so bad for a first class). I will be sure to update the rating and provide more feedback as I go through more lessons. I really like how Paul doesn't force you to take a package of classes as with some of the other instructors I've heard about.

He is so patient and knowledgeable, he is able to answer all kinds of questions that I have relating to guitar and music. He has AWESOME personality, when you take lessons with him, time flies. He is very good at learning a new song quickly. Sometimes I pick songs that I want to learn, and show these songs to him during class, some of the songs that he has never heard before, he can recognize the chords right away, and wrote them down and teach me how to play. Paul is a teacher who really cares about the progress of his students. In our first few meetings, he introduced me to different chords step by step and doesn't give too much all at once which helped me remember each chord easily. When I play he also corrects what I’m doing wrong by showing me techniques that will get me playing better. His lessons are also fun as he always incorporates different types of songs for each lesson. More than just a teacher.

I took guitar lessons with Paul for eight years. He helped me realize my natural ear for music, and allowed me to figure out what I wanted to learn. Our lessons were always different. Sometimes I would bring in songs that I wanted to learn, and sometimes he would have things he thought I should know how to play, which helped me learn similar songs later on. When I was applying to college and needed to learn how to read music and play jazz guitar, he tailored all of our lessons so that I could learn those techniques quickly and most importantly, efficiently.

Paul's personality transcends the teacher-student relationship, which allowed he and I to become very good friends. Paul William is an excellent teacher for whatever you need to learn. You can't go wrong taking lessons from him.

A very skilled teacher

Paul is a very skilled teacher. He has a lot of experience with guitar, and can play amazingly. He is very serious about my guitar playing, but doesn't put pressure on me. He is great about making sure I practice enough. If I have a problem with the song/tune we are currently working on, he is willing to change. One of my favorite things about Paul is that even though he's serious, he is really funny, and all of our lessons are fun. Another one of my favorite things about our lessons, is that most of the songs I learn, are chosen by me. He lets me have a say in the song choice. I definitely think he is a great teacher, and your son, daughter, etc. would learn a lot.

Paul is the man

I am older than your average student. I had never taken lessons before and always wanted to learn to play guitar so I went out an purchased an acoustic guitar. I tried to learn from on line as well as purchased DVD's but it just didn't feel right. There was something missing like the human touch. I had heard about Paul from a relative who gave me insight about his background and his education. I decided to give him a try.

I called the place that he was working at and booked my first lesson. He carefully went over how he was going to teach me and then patiently worked with me.

I know that I will never be as good as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck or Paul William, but to know that I can play a little is very gratifying.
