Caring, supportive, expert voice instruction for singers of all ages.

I believe in the extraordinary power of music to communicate, to inspire and, often, to heal. That belief underlies all my work. I adore country music, especially classic country. My greatest strength as a teacher is my sensitive and expert touch with students of all ages and personality types. The fundamentals of vocal technique underlie all my teaching, but the individual approach is tailored to each student, whatever their age or experience. My goal is to help you find the power to express through singing your unique self. It doesn't matter whether your voice is professional quality or whether it's even "good" in the conventional sense. It's YOUR voice. It has its own sound and characteristics, its own particular beauty, and the world needs to hear you! I have advanced training and expertise in musical study and vocal pedagogy, but the most important qualities I offer as a teacher are the simple human ones: understanding, patience, imagination, kindness, enthusiasm, respectfulness and absolute commitment to helping you meet your vocal goals.

    About Nancy R.

I’ve been a classical singer for 30 years and have sung leading soprano roles with the Caramoor Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, the Britten/Aldeburgh Festival, Glimmerglass Opera, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's, among many others. I also have undergraduate and master's degrees in vocal performance from the Manhattan School of Music and an undergraduate degree in American history from Brown University. But don't let the fact that I'm an "opera singer" give you the wrong idea. Yes, classical training gives me in-depth understanding of how the human voice works, but I love and teach music of all genres. My students include professional opera singers, but also professional and amateur rock and Broadway-style singers, college and conservatory students, teenagers singing in their school musicals, doing All-State chorus, or preparing for NYSSMA, as well as adults who are taking voice for the love of singing, the fun of the challenge and so they can join their local chorus, sound great on karaoke night and hit those high notes in the shower. I tailor my lessons to each singer's particular interests, goals and challenges. Some students thrive with a highly technical approach; some thrive in a less formal, more supportive environment; most singers do best with an approach that mixes the two. The important thing to know is that you will receive lessons that are specifically tailored to you. There's no single template.

I loved my lessons with Nancy! She not only helped me identify what my struggles were and how to address them, but she also cares a lot about her students and celebrates the progress no matter how big or small. She worked with me on my anxiety as it related to my voice and helped me grow in my confidence while singing. She was so patient with me and always understanding when my schedule would get crazy busy. I absolutely loved learning with her and would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to improve their singing!

It happens, through no fault of their own, that teachers can be so talented and credentialed that the class spotlight focuses on them. With Nancy however, the spotlight is put aside to create a stage atmosphere with enough spaciousness and comfortability for me to step into on my own, and at my pace. My learning happens not by emulation but through moving within in order to discover the inner landscape of my own instrument. Just as in her profile, she leads not with herself but with her pedagogy -- that of accompaniment. She meets me where I am, and from there we discover where my breath and voice tell us where to go. Been a helluva ride, thank you!
