American Sign Language teacher/tutor with 5 years experience.

Many students find learning a language hard or boring. Sign language is a very expressive and beautiful language. Some teachers are boring but I get creative and make learning fun for people that want to lean ASL

To my future students welcome!! I can't wait to get to know you! My name is Nicole, ASL is my favorite language because it's very expressive. I am hard of hearing and have a speech impediment which makes sign language easier for me to use. Fun fact #1 I was inspired to learn ASL from my deaf cousin. Fun fact #2 my deaf cousin taught me some ASL and I fell in love with it, I then took it upon myself to teach myself ASL. I went to school for ASL and I ended up graduating from Berkeley City College in 2019 with a certificate of achievement in American sign language. I volunteered as an assistant for a ASL teacher at Berkeley City College and I taught adults with special needs for almost a year. I worked with a young lady with down syndrome helping her expand her ASL vocabulary and knowledge. I really enjoy working with others and helping others especially when it comes to American sign language.

Just did the free intro class with you and really enjoyed it! You were patient and repeated things slowly when we needed it. My son's review: "I loved it and I learned a lot!" My almost 10yr old son took it with me as he's been wanting to learn sign language to help him communicate. He's ADHD and gets frustrated super fast and likes to communicate non verbally when he's mad so we've been looking to learning "officially". We learned today the colors of the rainbow along with his favorite color gold, numbers and letters. We hope to take a paid class soon when we have discretionary funds :)

    Experience

    ASL volunteer

    Jul, 2017 - Aug, 2017

    Berkeley City College

I volunteered to help out with the ASL 1 class for summer school. The experience was a lot of fun especially being able to help the students to the best of my ability. I would help the teacher out by answering any questions that the students had about homework or signs they didn't really know, making sure the students were using ASL and keeping their voices off, interpreting for the teacher when he needed to communicate with a student and helped out with fun ASL learning activities

    ASL Teacher

I taught an ASL class to adults with special needs which was a very cool and rewarding experience. I spent an hour a day teaching the class basic signs, we practiced counting, finger spelling, colors, as well as conversation skills.

    Tutor

    Aug, 2017 - Jan, 2018

    Berkeley City College

I tutored a girl with down syndrome which was a really fun and challenging experience. I worked with her on basic sign language skills as well as vocabulary and counting in ASL. Sometimes I would correct her when she signed something wrong and she would get frustrated with herself. Tutoring her was a challenge because come days she would forget the sign language vocabulary I would give her but overall it was a great experience
