Music Theory

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate
I've been teaching beginner-intermediate music theory since 2012. It's my goal to not only teach you theory, but to help you apply it to whatever instrument/style you play. Music theory mixed with some ear training (included in my lessons) can help you gain a deeper understanding of what it is you're hearing and playing. I want your weekly lesson to be something you look forward to rather than dread. I take a personalized approach to teaching, which means finding what works best for YOU and not anyone else. No matter what genre you're interested in, I look forward to helping you reach your musical goals!

Hi, my name is Nate W. I'm an electric bassist and pianist with over 20 years of experience playing in various groups - from classical to jazz to rock. I've been giving bass (beginner-advanced), piano (beginner), and music theory (beginner-intermediate) lessons since 2012.

I studied composition and performance as a Dean's List student at Berklee College of Music, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree. While there, I studied with some truly gifted musicians including Victor Bailey and Danny Morris. I also attended master classes with world renowned bassists such as Bootsy Collins, Ron Carter, and Victor Wooten.

Nathan has taught my children ages 5 and 7, and he has been utterly wonderful. Very patient with a nice dry sense of humor that my kids really enjoyed. He had the perfect balance of allowing the kids to learn at their own pace while pushing them to do more each week. It didn't take long for my older child to learn to read music on the staff and then play it, and he even encouraged her to write her own music! Meanwhile our younger child got into a groove where he always wanted to be the first to practice. Along with his reliability and ease, that all is the sign of a great teacher.

My son Noah is enjoying his lessons with Nathan. He thinks they are fun and he's progressing well. Nathan keeps him motivated with short daily "homework" practice sessions.

Nathan was great. My son didn't want to take piano lessons at first, but had completely changed his mind by the end of his first lesson. He said Nathan was "so cool" and he showed me all the things he learned in his first 30 minutes. We can't wait to continue his lessons.

First bass lesson. Nathan did a great job getting to know me, my knowledge/experience, my interests and goals. He provided clear instructions and homework which aligned with my interests. I look forward to my next lesson.

Nathan taught my three children for only about six weeks, unfortunately, due to his relocation, but he kept the kids interested, engaged, and challenged. He always made sure that lessons were fun and energized. We will miss him and wish him the very best in the Boston area!
