    About Nathan M.

Jazz saxophonist and woodwind doubler, Nathan holds a Masters of Art's in jazz studies from UMKC conservatory of music as well as a Bachelors of Music in composition from the University of Arkansas. While living in Kansas City, Nathan had the great fortune of studying with the illustrious Bobby Watson, former music director for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. An accomplished performer on saxophone, flute, and clarinet; Nathan has played for numerous touring broadway musicals including reed one books for West Side Story, Anything Goes, and White Christmas among others. Nathan is also a founding member of the Fayetteville Jazz Collective, an 18-piece jazz ensemble based in Northwest Arkansas. *** Lesson Details *** I'm willing to teach all ages and skill levels. While I will gladly cater to what the student wants to learn (you ARE paying me for my time after all), I prefer to help guide the student to develop a more "complete" skill set as a musician. Developing a "complete" skill set involves focusing more on the weaknesses of the musician to bring them to a similar skill level as the student's strengths. In my experience, this usually involves focusing more on ear-training for students who come out of traditional band programs and focusing more on reading skills and music theory for those who have learned mostly by ear. This "complete" understanding of ALL aspects of music is what makes a successful musician. Finding and tackling the student's weaknesses is the biggest reason why taking lessons is far superior to being "self-taught". Whether you want to make first chair, all-region band, prepare for college auditions, or just better your woodwind skills; I have the education and professional playing experience to help you realize your potential. *** Studio Equipment *** Numerous woodwind instruments Korg SV-1 electric piano Ability to record via Apple Logic *** Specialties *** While I have the education and experience to teach a variety of musical subjects, my passion is focused around teaching jazz improvisation and composition.
