Middle School General Music and Chorus Teacher
Aug, 2016 - Aug, 2019Amherst Regional Middle School
As a general music and chorus teacher at Amherst Regional Middle School, I was responsible for teaching daily music classes to students in grades 7-8, specifically focused on an introduction to music history, theory, analysis, and basic composition techniques. I designed and implemented curriculum for the Intro To Music course, which surveys a variety of musical genres from Hip-Hop to Taiko to Motown to Isicathamia, while giving students experience with a variety of approaches to music making including beat-making, percussion, piano, vocal, and guitar. I also facilitated a study of introductory music production, focusing on the practice of sampling and beat-making in which students had the opportunity to create their own beats from scratch using an IOS sampler application. In addition, I directed 7th & 8th grade chorus classes, where I organized and facilitated multiple school and community concerts, as well as daily rehearsals, where we emphasized skill-building, tone production, refining middle-school level musicality, a diverse repertoire of music, and vocal health. Throughout my work at ARMS, I prioritized conversations of identity and social justice as they relate to the creation and performance of music, relying on both notable historical examples as well as students’ lived experiences.
