    About Nathan M.

Teaching and playing music have always been closely linked for me throughout my career. I began performing professionally at thirteen, and two years later began giving private lessons, constantly incorporating new techniques and lessons I was learning from my gigs into my teaching curriculum. This early start in both areas has provided a wonderful foundation for my teaching and performing careers, both of which have continued for more than a decade and a half. During that time, I've had the joy of working with students of all ages as a drum instructor at Northfield Mount Hermon, a music teacher at Greens Farms Academy, a general music and chorus teacher at Amherst Middle School, a summer music instructor at Deerfield Academy, and with continued private lessons. I've also recorded drums on over 20 albums and played hundreds of shows with a diverse group of artists across the country. In my lessons, my highest priority is meeting students at their level and making sure that our work is helping them to progress towards theirs goals as a musician/instrumentalist. With a combination of focus on musicality, technique, and developing a musical vocabulary, students will both improve their fundamental skills on their instrument, while also expanding their more general musical understanding, all within a safe, supportive, and encouraging learning environment. I look forward to working with you!

    Experience

    Private Drum Instructor

    Sep, 2017 - Present

    Northfield Mount Hermon

I have worked as the drum teacher at Northfield Mount Hermon for the past two years, during which time I have taught students of a variety of skill and experience levels and a diverse array of musical interests. In our time together, students studies have primarily included refining/expanding rudimental technique and coordination, pop, rock, jazz, hip-hop, and classical style and technique, transcription, and musical phrasing in a background and solo context.

Middle School General Music and Chorus Teacher

    Aug, 2016 - Aug, 2019

    Amherst Regional Middle School

As a general music and chorus teacher at Amherst Regional Middle School, I was responsible for teaching daily music classes to students in grades 7-8, specifically focused on an introduction to music history, theory, analysis, and basic composition techniques. I designed and implemented curriculum for the Intro To Music course, which surveys a variety of musical genres from Hip-Hop to Taiko to Motown to Isicathamia, while giving students experience with a variety of approaches to music making including beat-making, percussion, piano, vocal, and guitar. I also facilitated a study of introductory music production, focusing on the practice of sampling and beat-making in which students had the opportunity to create their own beats from scratch using an IOS sampler application. In addition, I directed 7th & 8th grade chorus classes, where I organized and facilitated multiple school and community concerts, as well as daily rehearsals, where we emphasized skill-building, tone production, refining middle-school level musicality, a diverse repertoire of music, and vocal health. Throughout my work at ARMS, I prioritized conversations of identity and social justice as they relate to the creation and performance of music, relying on both notable historical examples as well as students’ lived experiences.

    Middle School Adjunct Music Teacher

    Sep, 2014 - Present

    Greens Farms Academy

As the middle school adjunct music teacher at GFA, I was responsible for directing sectional and group choral rehearsals for students in 6th - 8th grade.

Bass, Drum, Guitar, Piano, and Vocal Teacher

    Sep, 2014 - Jul, 2015

    Forbes Music Company

As a music instructor with Forbes Music Company, I worked with a variety of students across the NY/Southern Connecticut regions as a bass, drum, guitar, piano, and vocal instructor with students ranging in age from 7-65. Lessons on each instrument involved emphasis on refining essential technical skills and implementing those skills in a musical context, as well as genre-focused studies.

    Lower School Music Teacher

    Feb, 2013 - Aug, 2014

    Greens Farms Academy

As the lower school music teacher at GFA, I was responsible for teaching daily music classes to students in grades K-5, specifically focusing on developing an understanding of elementary level rhythm, melody, and harmony, all while maintaining enjoyable classroom environment that fosters creativity and growth. In addition to regular classroom work, I was in charge of directing Fourth and Fifth Grade choruses during weekly rehearsals, as well as organizing their end of semester performances.

    Music Producer, Composer, and Multi-Instrumentalist

    Jan, 2013 - Present

    Echo Base Production / Freelance

I have worked as the producer on a number of musical projects, creating the instrumental arrangements, providing compositional and lyrical edits, and leading recording and mixing sessions. I've also composed or co-wrote pieces of music for a variety of solo artists, including but not limited to The Rooks, Raycee Jones, Josh The Word, Madison Purcell, and many more. I have and continue to perform (live and recorded) as the drummer or bassist alongside a variety of musical groups, notably Old Flame, Josh The Word, The Rooks, Trot Fox, Henry Hall, Jess Best, and many more. In 2019, I founded Echo Base Production, a full service music production company out of Western Massachusetts specializing in Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop, R&B and Folk production. My work has been featured in numerous print and online publications, including but not limited to The New Yorker, Afropunk, Okayplayer, The Deli Magazine, and many more.
