As a full-time artist, I perform and teach throughout the country. I work with a wide range of students from traditional classrooms and universities to jails and Fortune 500 companies. I craft custom commissioned poems and facilitate professional development trainings around high-level communication, as well as poetry workshops.  Additionally, I have developed content for youtube and the digital space through companies like SoulPancake and Sephora.

As the only female producer and host of the nations largest poetry venue, my role was unique. Beyond the complexity of hosting a live show weekly, I was responsible for building community and holding space for young artists to grow.

I have been a full-time poet and teaching artist for over 15 years. I have lessons for first-time writers, those returning after many years away from the page, young people interested in slam poetry and those just wanting to express themselves.  I believe poetry and creativity have the power to change your life. I teach mostly freeform but love to introduce students to different forms and styles. I specialize in finding your own voice and building personal confidence. I want students to reach their personal goals while having a blast! Your poems are safe with me!

For the past 15 years, I have traveled the country teaching and performing at universities, colleges, and high schools.  I was the first female producer and host of the nation's largest poetry venue, Da Poetry Lounge and I've worked extensively in non-profit, education and with major brands like Sephora and SoulPancake. I have seven collections of poetry published and many viral videos featuring my poetry. I am currently the Lead Teaching Artist for Street Poets, teaching poetry to incarcerated youth throughout Los Angeles County. I am cleared for teaching through LAUSD, Pasadena Unified, and the Probation Department.

Natalie is a teacher by nature.  When I took her class for the first time, my only goal was to become a better writer.  At least that’s what I said.  I told everyone I had no intention of reading my poems on stage  but the truth was, that’s what I really wanted to do.  I just didn’t think I could.  Natalie  saw through what I was saying and would not allow me to play small as long as I was a student in her class.  She made sure I knew that my voice and my story was not only important, but needed.  Eight years later, I am a published author who performs at colleges across the country,  a TedX speaker, 2017 Woman of the Year, and the co founder of a community organization called Chingona Fire.  I say all of that to say,  none of the things I am doing today would be possible without the lessons I learned from Natalie.  Sometimes all it takes is one teacher to help someone find their voice.  And that’s who Natalie is in the world,  and trust me; you can bet on her every time.

Natalie, by far, is one of the most talented poets that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She shares her gift not only with incarcerated students, but with other activists and teaching artists in order to support and uplift even more youth. She is a dynamic teacher that is organized, resourceful, and passionate. Her engaging lessons always lead to powerful reflections that makes room for deep impact in the lives of our youth. The tools that she uses in the classroom, be it her own artistic work, handouts that she has created, or auditory resources, are always perfectly woven into the lesson and bring deeper meaning. She is one of those teachers that you just never forget.
