Beginner, IntermediateI really believe in music theory and will require all of my piano students to take it along with their piano lessons. Since music theory makes reading music easier and faster, it is well worth the effort and it is, in my opinion, actually fun. :)
I have also found flashcards to be wonderful aids in memorizing musical concepts. In music, memorization pays off, so studying flashcards is a great investment in a person's musical future. :)

Class Structure
The class structure information below is an example of the way in which I intend to carry out my lessons with students. However, I will be sensitive to students' individual needs and will gladly make adjustments as necessary. I list my plan for the first three piano lessons below.
My first lesson with students will be an informal, relaxed interview and orientation. I will try to figure out what students do and do not know about playing the piano and reading music. I will also orient students to the piano (88 keys, black and white keys, the names and uses of the three pedals etc.). If this process goes quickly, and/or if a student is not an absolute beginner, I may introduce the finger labeling system and assign a song and a music theory lesson.
In my second lesson with students, I will introduce the finger labeling system (very simple), assign students their first song or songs and introduce them to some notes. I will assign flashcards to help with learning notes. I may choose to assign the first music theory lesson at this point.
In my third lesson with students, I will definitely add music theory to the piano lesson assignments. From this point on, I will assign songs, music theory lessons and very often flashcards as well for each week's assignment. I value thorough learning and good comprehension and am a patient and kind teacher.

Teaching Materials:
The piano books I am most familiar with are the "Keys for the Kingdom" series (made for children) and the Royal Conservatory's "Celebration Series" (this one is more adult friendly). These are the books I prefer to use, but I am open to exploring other options with students and student's parents.
The piano books I have mentioned have music theory books included in each level. I will be happy to use these music theory books, but am also open to using Julie McIntosh Johnson's "Basics of Keyboard Theory" series.
I will require all of my students to purchase flashcards. I recommend the flashcards from either Alfred's Music or Neil. A Kjos Music Company.

About Naomi O.
I have been playing the piano for 14 years. I love musical composition and have written ~40 + Christian songs. Since I love musical composition, naturally I also love music theory-something that has helped me to expand my "musical toolkit" of ideas.
I am able to compose in several genres. Most of my music would probably fall most closely under the "Folk" label, but I have also written some pieces that are more classical in sound. I have considered writing some music in the country and southern gospel genres as well. All of the music I compose is Christian music (except for when I create strictly instrumental compositions).
I read music pretty fluidly and I love studying written music. I think that music is so orderly, dependable, versatile and fascinating. I have personally found that music theory has helped me to read music faster and with greater ease. It has also enhanced my ability to make my compositions more complex and interesting.
If you are a dedicated and determined student, and if I seem like a good fit for you, I welcome you to book a lesson with me. :)

I have really enjoyed taking piano playing lessons with Naomi. Working with her, I am learning to practice and play from written music and even surprising myself along the way. Still, I feel the best is to come!

I started working with Naomi just a few months ago and I already feel that she is one of the most inspiring teachers that I have ever had. She has a real joy for music and is an enthusiastic instructor. She has really taken the time to 'go into the weeds' with me and patiently answers all of my questions about music theory. I had tried other teachers in the past, but Naomi is careful to keep the content in step with my learning pace.
I have really appreciated her instruction.
