I teach private violin lessons for beginner and intermediate level students. I have been teaching violin for 17 years. I love working with both children and adults of all ages. No previous experience is necessary-- just a love for music!
I use a combination of classical techniques and Suzuki method along with lots of patience, positivity and creativity.
About me: I am a classically trained violinist with over 23 years of experience and a diverse musical background. I've performed with the University Orchestra and the UT Opera Society at the University of Texas, several string quartets and many bands-- folk, country, rock, experimental, pop and Mariachi to name a few. I periodically tour as a performer nationally and internationally.
In addition to teaching private lessons for many years, I taught violin at a public school in Austin and have been working with students at music schools in the Portland area for the past year.
For those who live outside of Portland or don't want to make the drive, I offer online lessons via Skype which I've had a great success rate with. I've taught students all over globe from New York to Brazil and beyond.

When I'm not teaching lessons from my home studio I am working with students at a local Music school in the Portland area. These students range from pre-school age to adults.
I have been a self employed violin teacher for over 17 years. Over the years, I have gotten to work with dozens of awesome students, from kids as young as 3 to adults in their 60's.
I've been subbing over at the Ethos Music school in NE Portland for the past few months. I was working with kids ages 5 up to adults and had a great time teaching violin basics.
I taught the violin class for Linder Elementary School's Mariachi program for about 3 years. We were Austin's only elementary-aged Mariachi group. Our group performed at events around Austin and was been featured on local news stations. Classes were taught in a group setting so I was working with about 5-8 students at a time.+ Read More
I worked with Girls Rock Camp Austin for 3 years. Girls Rock Austin is a camp that empowers young females through music. Campers learn how to play an instrument, form a band and attend workshops on art, music history, self defense etc.
Naomi is wonder violin teacher. She was so incredibly patient with my 3-yr old daughter, who can be quite playful and teasing at times. After only 4 months of one weekly half-hour lessons with Naomi, my daughter can now play Twinkle Little Star and has even started reading some music. It’s very difficult to find an instructor who’s willing to take on a student so young, but Naomi can definitely take on that challenge. She’s amazing, and we wish she was still here in Portland!+ Read More
I am the Manager of Happy Valley Arts Academy where Naomi teaches lessons. She is great to work with! She is creditable, on time (which is very important), great communication and works amazingly with the students and parents.
My daughter has been loving her lessons with Naomi. She is patient, flexible, encouraging and inspiring! I recommend her wholeheartedly.
We are so lucky to have found Naomi! My son just started playing in December and the progress he has made in just a couple of months is really amazing. Naomi is a wonderful instructor. She’s kind, patient, knowledgeable, and dedicated to helping her students achieve success. Naomi really fosters my son’s love of the violin and I can tell how much he respects her. I also have to say that I’m really grateful for the ability to do a blend of online and in-person lessons...it’s very helpful when our calendar is full to know that we can get a high-quality lesson from the comfort of home and, yet, still have the ability to get in-person instruction should my son need it. Thanks so much, Naomi!+ Read More
Naomi is a patient teacher and an excellent communicator. As an adult student she really knows how to push me and when to slow down. I look forward to my lessons every week.
Naomi is a great instructor. My son has worked with her over Skype and has had pretty steady improvement over the past several months. She is patient and knowledgable. My son enjoys working with her and looks forward to continuing to learn the violin.
Our experience with Naomi has been all positive! She's consistent and reliable, flexible when necessary, and our daughter is enjoying her lessons, and her playing is steadily improving! 5 stars!
Naomi is the most patient and knowledgeable instructor we have ever had. My daughter loves going to the lessons and has progressed steadily since beginning.
My first lesson went well, you can ask her anything. Awesome experience so far, i look forward to working hard toward playing the violin. With Naomi you can tell she wants to help you to succeed. Happy learning and practicing.
Naomi is so sweet! I really enjoyed my first lesson with her and looking forward to have more.
Great experience so far. I am looking forward to learning.
I asked Joshua Bell (one of the greatest violinist of our time) about how to be a great violinist? To which he responded by saying: "Find a really good teacher, one who pushes you and cares for your success."
I would not be exaggerating by saying Naomi is one of those teachers.
I've been taking lessons for almost 4 years and Naomi has been nothing but supportive, cheerful, energetic, focused and dedicated to finding even the minutest mistake. Naomi has tirelessly pointed out even the slightest of out of tune notes; and she demands perfection before moving on to next lesson. She focuses on fundamental over frills; and she really cares for the success of her students.
She has always pushed me and motivated me in many creative ways to practice and be better at violin. I am going to continue taking lessons with her and would highly recommend Naomi.
Naomi is an excellent teacher. She is patient, kind, and won't blow you off if you have a question. In the 2 years that she was my teacher, she has taught me a lot about the violin, which techniques to use, how to tune my instrument, and much more. If you want to learn the violin, take her as your teacher! You won't regret it :)+ Read More
I was totally a beginner in Violin when I started my lessons with Naomi. She is a very patient and loving teacher, taught me how to hold bow correctly, with a lot of helpful practice and encouragement, which is really helpful to beginners who know nothing. She always tried her best to help me to master the skills, a lot of observation and correction, also encouragement. When I first started, I never expect to keep learning for over a year. Then five years later, I found myself still enjoy the lesson and playing violin. Due to some personal reasons, I have to give up my violin lesson. But my five years experience of learning violin is like a difficult but fun journey, and Naomi is there to keep me on the track and make the journey even more enjoyable.
Yes, I highly recommend Naomi to be your violin teacher!
Naomi is a great violin teacher. She is very attentive, experienced and energetic.
I took lessons from her with one of my friend for about 4 years. We were both beginners and start our lesson when we were 30 something. Did not expect to last more than one year. (Due to our laziness...) At the end, the lesson was something to look forward to every week and I only stop taking lessons because I move out of Austin.
I highly recommend her to be your violin teacher. You will have a fun time too.
Naomi is a welcoming and thorough teacher. She took time with me at the start of my lessons, to gauge exactly where I was in technique and also what bad habits needed to be re-directed. She is very patient but consistent on the techniques that need to be practiced and accomplished. Her expertise is extensive and she plays may genres of music so would be an excellent teacher for people interested in areas other than classical. But as the basics are the same in all, she makes sure one is well grounded in those first. I really enjoyed my lessons with here and though personal circumstances dictated that I cease for the time being, I would really love to be able to have her as a teacher again.+ Read More
