I have played guitar for 25+ years, and have over 20 years of experience teaching and performing professionally across a range of styles. I've taught all levels, including: - Beginners who are still learning about their first guitar. - Intermediate players who are bored of their minor pentatonics and barre chords, and need to know what comes next. - Advanced guitarists who have already studied with other teachers for many years and sought me out after seeing me perform and realizing I had some knowledge their previous teacher did not possess. I've taught 8-12 year olds, teenagers, and college students, on up to working adults, and retired grandparents. I have two music degrees from some of the top programs in the world: - BFA from The New School (NYC, 2012) - MM from The Aaron Copland School of Music (Flushing, NY 2018) I received either partial or full scholarship offers from several of the schools I applied to (including Berklee, CalArts, UMKC, New School), and can give you insights into what makes a successful audition. My degrees are in jazz guitar, and I would consider myself first and foremost to be a blues and jazz guitarist, but I have gigged in just about every style over the years...blues, jazz, pop, r&b, hip-hop, jam bands, musical theater, rock, etc. When you begin studying with me, we will learn universal skills like open chords, bar chords, strumming and picking, and how to play in time with other musicians, and use these concepts to play some songs from popular music (pop, rock, classic rock, country, etc.). As you progress, you'll begin realizing you can figure out songs for yourself (or from many other places on the web) and our focus will start shifting towards things like: - Learning to improvise solos over rock, pop, and blues - Scales and modes and how they can be used to make music - Adding interest to barre chord shapes by incorporating some other notes - Mapping out the fretboard through triads and triad inversions - 7th chords and 7th chord inversions all over the neck - Ideas to break up your scale playing and make it more interesting and musical - Soloing over more advanced chord progressions and forms from the jazz world - Playing solo guitar and incorporating both the melody and chords simultaneously - Learning to reharmonize songs you know to add new and interesting chords - Ideas to help your time, feel, and groove - Training your ears in various ways - Learning to read musical notation This list could go on and on, but you get the idea...I have enough material to keep you interested for a lifetime of musical study. Please check out my profile videos to see some of these concepts at work. Currently, I am teaching online only.
