Music Performance with Michael L.

Michael L. is originally from Irvine, California. He started his music studies with Russian and Moldovan teachers Alex Zhiroff and Simon Kaganovsky. With their guidance he was introduced to orchestral playing. He has been principal for the Irvine Classical Players and La Primavera/Four Seasons, and was a member for three years in the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra. Michael has won concerto competitions and performed solo with the above listed orchestras, and his Freshman year at NYU he was awarded principal of the Reparatory Orchestra. At NYU, he studied with Marion Feldman. This past year Michael graduated from NYU with a B.M. in Cello Performance and received Runner-up in the NYU Concerto Competition for the second time. Michael performed the Haydn Cello Concerto in C major with the Irvine Classical players in six concerts on a tour of France in 2009. His Freshman and Sophomore year NYU Piano Trio also studied abroad in Italy and played over 30 concerts. As a teacher, Michael has worked as Teaching Assistant to his high school teacher and esteemed cellist, John Walz, at the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. His duties at Idyllwild Arts Summer Program included teaching private lessons and coaching chamber groups. Looking toward the future, Michael hopes to form his own student base and become a member of a professional orchestra. In his free time, he enjoys swimming and taking long walks. He is also an avid video gamer when he has the time. *** Lesson Details *** I have a lot of different practice techniques that can make learning the technical aspects of pieces on the cello fun and efficient. The techniques require patience to learn and a personal dedication, which includes parental involvement especially for younger students.My curriculum depends on a couple student qualities: how hard the student is able and willing to work, how much time the student has to practice, and whether or not the student wishes to work towards being a professional. No matter what, music is both an outlet for passion and the discipline required to practice cello carefully trains general studying ability. *** Studio Equipment *** Everything necessary *** Travel Equipment *** I can provide: Music, Music Stand, backup bow, proper cello chair, place to have lesson, places to rent/buy cellos from. I cannot provide: Cello, permanent bow, originals of music (if copyrighted) *** Specialties *** I am registered with the Suzuki Association of America. My main focus tends to lean towards the bow hand as that is where tone is developed; however, intonation and left hand technique are a necessity requiring patient calculated practice. For both bow and the left hand, personal methods inspired by my teachers and the Suzuki Method are at the core of my teaching.
