SINGING: During vocal lessons we will work on the musical style of your choice. Generally speaking, we will spend about half of the lesson working on breathing technique and vocal exercises suited to your style and skill level. The rest of the lesson we will work on applying technique to songs. If you would prefer to only work on technique during your lessons, that is fine too- just mention it!

About Missy M.

Missy is a multi-talented vocalist and vocal coach experienced in electric and acoustic guitar and piano. Since graduating from world-renowned Berklee College of Music in 2003, Missy has performed live with bands from the San Diego Indie Music Fest to CBGB's and as a solo·acoustic artist across the country, as well as teaching private lessons in voice, piano, and guitar. Graduating as a Professional Music Major, Missy focused on Music Business and Songwriting and uses this background·in addition to Music Theory to help her students to become well-rounded musicians. As a professional musician, Missy has worked as a back-up vocalist, acoustic guitarist (Katie Armiger, Cold River Records), demo-singer, and songwriter (Megatraxx, LA). Missy studied under top-notch vocal coach, Mark Baxter (Aerosmith, Goo Goo Dolls, Journey) and utilizes Baxter's techniques in conjunction with her own to help singers of all levels and styles. Missy's notable students include singer/songwriter Rachel Brown and Paul Mitchell from America's Got Talent ('Tommy Mitchell')
For Songwriting style, check out Boston to Austin (Co-written with Will Champlin of ABC's The Voice, Mike Verge)

*** Lesson Details ***
I am here to teach you at the pace that works best for you! Everyone is different and everyone likes different styles of music- I try to cater to that as much as possible. I will always set the expectation bar as high as you're willing to go.

For piano, when teaching in books, I normally go for the Faber! For guitar, various renditions of Hal Leonard, and for voice, The Rock and Roll Singer's Survival Manual. If you feel that you're better suited to learn primarily by ear or without the specific training of instruction books, let me know and we can pursue alternatives.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Great room setup for lessons with keyboard and instruments. Parents can sit in on lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Mark Baxter (Steven Tyler, Steve Perry vocal coach) method- geared toward pop/rock/country/blues.

I work well with all types of beginner piano and guitar players and excel with people interested in learning how to write songs, learn chords and fun rock riffs.

It's been awhile since I wrote a review and I was compelled to leave one today. I had a really bad allergy attack and could barely talk let along sing...I thought. Despite my current voice condition I stuck with my appointment. Much to my amazement Missy and her incredible knowledge as a voice instructor, navigated me through just the right warm ups. To my astonishment, I was able to sing and carry a note. Who knew? She is wonderful to work with! I so appreciate you, Missy. Your seemingly endless knowledge enables me to not only be encouraged but to carry on with my journey of singing. No matter what shape my voice might be in.

Missy is very encouraging. She helped me smooth out the final riffs on 2 songs I am performing. I delight in how she took a rust bucket and worked with me to make a finely tuned instrument. Thank you Missy!

Very patient, if a way to reach a note is hard or difficult Missy draws from knowledge of honning in on the difficulty and using another way to achieve the same goal. Thank you Missy!

Once again Missy hits it out of the park with her coaching and teaching skills. She stretches me and challenges me whether it is a simple scale adding higher and lower notes to what I can't even think I can make or breath control that I know I will surely die from. With her practice regime I surprise myself that before too long I can hit those notes and not die singing with one breath. Thank you Miss Missy!

Once again Missy's education of the mechanics of what the voice is doing is very helpful to me. I appriciate the atmosphere she continues to make for me. It enables me to grow in my comfort of making mistakes and learning from them instead of the mental gymnastics of, "It's not perfect, I quite". Her encouragement and teaching skills are helping me achieve far more than just a voice to sing with. Thank you!

I love that she is very real with me. I don't feel like she is telling me, "Good Job", when it isn't. She encourages when I am on point and helps me get through the tough spots. She is inovated and I appriciate the knowledge she shares about how the mechanics of singing works. vocal cords, folds, diaphram etc.

Missy is a great instructor when it comes to explaining how the muscles work together, how to focus on specific exercises that help to create the basis for good sound quality and the right muscle memory. She is an honest and truthful encourager.

The environment Missy creates: 1. I learn the mechanics of my muscles to obtain a better sound 2. I'm Encouraged to work through the "bad" sounds, that have shut me down in the past, which enables me to learn a different way to approach a better sound. Most important working with her has helped me break free from the shame of "not getting the notes right the first time". I feel hopeful.

Very good at explaining. Has a great knowledge of the human body and how the mechanics of it relate to support a more enriched singing voice. Over all a great teacher.

Missy is very professional and easy to work with. My daughter loves her energetic and fun personality. She understands the diversity of a student’s tastes and goals. She gently encourages students to practice so they attain their passion in music. My daughter loves her lessons.

i was looking for a singing teacher that could help me get more edge in my voice--more bluesy rock edgy sounds into my singing not medal screaming. i’m talking about bluesy rock grit and rasp like chris cornell.
well, this is one of missy’s specialties and i’m so happy i found her because within the first session missy had me on my way to getting those effects into my voice without strain or pain. plus, just as important she was giving me the confidence i needed to sing with those effects.
also, in our sessions when i sometimes have difficulty with a melody, she’s able to pinpoint the exact note i was needing to fix--plus help me with the entire phasing and improvising with the phasing.
missy tailored my lessons around my specific needs without the extra unnecessary fluff that other singing teachers put singers through, wasting time and money.
listen, missy is amazing vocal teacher and fun to work with. she brings passion, enthusiasm, and most importantly missy is giving me the technique and the confidence to sing again―oh, forgot to mention i stopped singing for over 20 years and only recently had the desire to sing again. i’m glad i found missy.

She was very patient and encouraging to my little guy at his first lesson. We left with exercises and everything we needed to practice during the week. Going great so far!

Missy is great! She has a unique way of understanding how I, as an individual, learn rather than cookie cutter teaching. She explains why we are doing things the way we are and how it will help me be able to play later. I'd recommend her to anyone and I'm looking forward to me next lesson!

If you are looking for a top-notch music instructor for voice, guitar, or piano, look no further!
My granddaughters took voice, guitar, and piano from Missy from the age of third grade through high school. I selected Missy due to her experience: classically trained on piano and voice during her formative years, studied at Berklee College of Music, Boston, toured the country as a solo singer/songwriter, and played world-famous and iconic venues, including the late CBGBs in New York City and the Bluebird in Nashville. You can find her on iTunes, and one of her students, Paul Thomas Mitchell (a.k.a. Tommy Mitchell) was on the hit television show, America's Got Talent.
When my granddaughters were young, Missy worked tirelessly to create lesson plans for my granddaughters in order to keep them interested in music. For example, if my younger granddaughter (3rd grade at the time) was unmotivated to practice in her workbooks at home, Missy would spend part of a lesson just talking with my granddaughter about what music she was currently enjoying. Then Missy would incorporate that music into her lesson plan. As a result, my granddaughter became once again motivated to practice. Missy makes lessons fun while still teaching technique.
I never imagined all that my granddaughters would learn and enjoy while studying under Missy. And Missy's work with her students does not end in her music studio. My granddaughters participated in summer band camps and performed at small local venues, all organized by Missy.
Although my granddaughters no longer take lessons from Missy, because they live out of town and are in college, we all consider her a dear friend. She genuinely cares about her students and keeps in touch long after lessons end.

I worked for missy for over 5 years before going off to school. She is incredibly talented, an excellent teacher, and is constantly trying out new techniques that will fit each individual student. I followed her through multiple locations around Nashville, She was always very flexible and would find time to make up lessons either online or in person. Love working with her!

I am a novice vocalist. Missy is fun to work with and talk to. She gives vocal exercises and tricks, but explains the reasons for doing them, how they're going to help. She has allowed me to try a range of different types of music. My voice is getting stronger and better and my confidence is getting stronger also. I look forward to my lesson ever week. Missy is very easy to work with.

Missy is a great teacher!

Missy has been very helpful, and I started seeing almost immediate improvement in my vocal range, which ultimately led to greater confidence. She is fun to work with and talk to. She not only gives vocal exercises and tricks, but explains the reasons for doing them, how they're going to help. I reccomend her as highly as possible!!!

Great teacher for multiple instruments

This instructor has a solid foundation in music theory which can help students of all skill levels and instrument choice...including voice. I have already benefited from her expertise on both piano and voice as instruments, as well as general music concepts like voice leading, use of scale, tonal variation and dynamic. Very easy to understand and work with. I have no reservations about recommending this instructor.

great local talent

Missy is very professional and provides some interesting pointers, (HeHe), not laughing. I expect to gain much ability from her input. I am a beginner singer, but elderly. I believe Missy will be able to extend my vocal range. I entered a singing contest last year for the first time and this is why I have chosen to get some lessons. See you on the Ryman stage in the latter part of this year.
