English (ESL) with Mira W.

I am currently a 4th grade teacher, living in the mountains of Colorado. I recently moved back from spending almost three years abroad in Costa Rica. I started out teaching adults ESL at an international school in a big city, and later moved to the mountains and cloud forest of Costa Rica to teach 3rd and 4th grade. I loved both of these very different experiences and enjoy the challenges and opportunities of teaching both adults and children. With both groups, I love to make my lessons interactive and full of conversation and creativity. I love to plan out my own curriculum because I feel that I can express myself and my passions through my plans, and experiment with what works best. I like that it allows me to be creative as well, and not just repeat what has been done all along. Part of why I enjoy teaching is because I really value getting to know different people and ways of living, which can be reflected in the education I pursued for myself-Sociology. I have a master's in Sociology from the University of Chicago and feel that through teaching ESL, I can introduce people to a new culture and way of living, and learn about their culture and differences at the same time. In this way, teaching ensures that I am constantly learning -which is something I am very passionate about. While teaching in the cloud forest, I loved seeing all the different insects and wildlife that lived there. I loved my runs through the vine filled paths and seeing the quetzales in the trees. I also love photography and got a gig through a company to take pictures of my experience teaching. I love taking photos of what I am passionate about and ones that capture the joy and excitement in a classroom. I am excited to get to know you , help you reach your goals, and hope we can learn so many things together!
