Teaching since:

My name is Minzo, and I'm a cellist and educator originally from Philadelphia! I graduated from the Peabody Institute of Music of the Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelors of Music in cello performance. Upon graduating in 2016, I moved to Houston in order to pursue a Masters of Music degree at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

As an educator, I have experience teaching young children who have never touched a cello before, to advanced college students who have been studying for as long as I have! Each student has his or her own difficulties, and my lessons are tailored specifically for each student. From week to week, whatever the issues, the student can be assured that specific difficulties will be targeted.

If you are a beginning student, young or old, I will teach you the basics of cello playing, such as hand positions, note names, and terminology of the different parts of the cello. As you become more advanced, we will begin to explore musicality, such as shaping phrases and understanding how the music works as the composer intended. I do encourage an open dialogue between the student and teacher, as often there might be something that I can learn from you!

As a cellist, I have had the honor of performing for and working closely with artists such as Steven Isserlis, Robert DeMaine, Jeremy Denk, and countless others for masterclasses and concerts. In order to get a sense of where my schooling is from, I studied for 5 years under Alan Stepansky, who is the former Associate Principal Cellist of the New York Philharmonic. Currently, I study with Desmond Hoebig, who has had the title of Principal Cellist of the Cleveland, Houston, and Cincinatti orchestras. I have learned everything that I know from these great cellists, and I hope to pass what I’ve learned on to you!

Minzo was my summer instructor for three months. Though I only had the opportunity to be mentored by him for a short period of time, by the end of the summer I could easily see how greatly and quickly I improved! He is a fantastic cellist, and it goes to show through his ability to develop technique and musicality. I always felt motivated and challenged during our lessons. He is a great teacher for any cellist regardless of prior experience or skill level!
