Overview

Hi. My name is Mike J. I am a full time music instructor with over 30 years of experience teaching, performing and writing music. I teach both steel string guitar (acoustic or electric) and classical (nylon string) guitar as well as the electric bass and the ukulele.

I incorporate music theory into my lessons but can also teach theory by itself.

I cover rock, folk, pop, blues, jazz, gospel, country or classical. I teach fingerpicking and flat-picking. I strive to find a good balance each lesson between the study of reading, technique and music theory and learning songs you know and like.

I have had excellent results with this approach so that typically ¼ of my students have stayed and studied with me for over 3 years!

Here's an article I wrote on some of the reasons I enjoy teaching:

I look forward to the possibility of helping you reach your musical goals.

I'm a 42 yr old man with no music training. The teacher has been very patient and encouraging as he has taught me to play the Bass guitar.

Mike has been a great instructor. I am a beginner and he has been very helpful and patient with my lack of knowledge and ability. He answers all my questions and has been very encouraging and helpful. I am looking forward to continuing and finally being able to play the guitar!

Most of my life I've wanted to learn how to play the guitar so a couple years ago I started teaching myself from online tutorials. With no real structure and no one to hold me accountable, I had very little success. So 9 months ago I gave Mike a call. I'm a very busy individual but Mike was willing to work around my schedule and fit me in when it was convenient for me. The first few months were fairly difficult because I had developed some bad habits and was still very green. Mike ask me what kind of music I wanted to play, fixed my bad habits, and now he has me playing songs from Darius Rucker, Luke Bryan, The Eagles and more. Playing the music that I like has made it fun and motivates me to get better. Mike is an incredible guitar player and instructor! I'm looking forward to what he can teach me over the next few years.

Mike is a great guitar instructor. I have been taking lessons from him using my electric guitar to learn how to play rock and metal, but he has also been teaching me theory and all things important to being really good at playing guitar in general. I have never learned to play any instrument before but have always wanted to. Mike definitely knows his stuff and is an expert at playing guitar and teaching it. I've only taken lessons for about 4 months now but am surprised at myself by how well I can already play by applying the exercises and technique he teaches me, and being an adult that says a lot, because I don't always get to practice as much as I would like. I definitely plan on continuing my lessons with Mike because it is exciting to see my progress, and I know he will help me reach my goals to play. I've had some friends tell me that it took them 2 years of playing before they even started playing songs like Master of Puppets and I'm already about to start, and have already been able to play simpler songs completely. Also, every time I have a question about anything in guitar Mike always is able to explain it to me in a way I can understand.

I was playing guitar for about 2-3 years prior to getting lessons. Sure I was learning some things but not even close to the amount I've learned from Mike. I think Mike is a great teacher and if you're interested in learning how to play guitar, I'd definitely recommend taking lessons from him.
