My name is Mike W. I'd love to be your guitar or bass teacher! I have been in a successful indie band for almost 10 years. Having made 4 studio albums on Tooth and Nail Records and extensively toured the U.S. and Europe headlining and playing concerts with bands like Weezer, Brand New, Coheed and Cambria, Thursday, Sparta, Dr. Dog, Manchester Orchestra, Say Anything and Blonde Redhead, I have developed my craft. Now, I would like to share what I've learned about playing the guitar and bass through teaching motivated students of all skill levels. Because I have composed recorded and performed music for so long now, and have a bachelors degree in Secondary Education from Temple University, I have a lot to offer you as your teacher. *** Lesson Details *** We can focus our time together working on accomplishing the goals that you set for yourself. If you'd prefer that I guide us through a curriculum of my choice, I am okay with that as well! You can expect a positive, fun and professional environment where we work at your pace. What are your interests? Here are some examples of what some of my students have been working on: Expanding their understanding of playing chords, Improving their technique through finger exercises, Composing original songs through the study of theory, Learning how to play the guitar solo for the song "In Bloom" by Nirvana, Arranging a guitar part for the song "Going On" by Gnarls Barkley, Learning how to play with a live band, Using effects pedals and appreciating different guitar tones. We also host a show at my house where you play 1 or 2 songs solo or with a professional back up band that I put together. These shows have been a great experience for everyone because they build confidence and allow you to share your music with a receptive and supportive audience. *** Studio Equipment *** Studio space in basement, large, finished space, band practice space, room for parents to wait *** Travel Equipment *** My own amp and guitar *** Specialties *** I specialize in theory as well as teaching students songs that they choose in a way that is appropriate to their skill level. I focus on finger exercises to develop technique and help them compose original pieces with a study of theory. Scales are important as well as different chord voicing and inversions. Standard forms for Rock/ Jazz and Funk are also studies. I am more of an alternative rock guitarist than jazz or classical.
