Teaching since:
August 1979

Born and raised in New Jersey, I have been involved with music for many years. The instruments that I play include Trumpet, French Horn, Handbells, Organ, Voice, and Piano. I received my formal education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, which is where I earned a B.A. degree with Honors in Music. In order to obtain my Honors, I chose to develop elementary lessons on Chinese folk music. In my Junior year of college, I performed a dual media recital in both Voice and Piano, and for my Senior year recital, I focused on giving a Vocal performance. These recitals demonstrated the musical talent and techniques that I had developed throughout my experience at college. In addition to my musical experiences in college, I have also learned about various pedagogical approaches through both my vocal studies as well as my studies on the keyboard. There is always more than one approach to teaching musical concepts! As a musician, I have performed in both the Bethlehem/Allentown area and the central New Jersery area. In addition, I have sung as a member of the Princeton Pro Musica and sat as a member on the executive board of the Princeton Girlchoir. These experiences have enhanced my professional insight as a musical instructor today. At present, I am a teacher in the classroom, an organist at a local Presbyterian church, and a private piano instructor. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy seeing my students grow and develop as musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
My instruction correlates with the age, the musical background, and the public/private school music curriculum of the student. Each lesson is a special musical vignette in the sense that it is a unique learning time for the student. It is important for the student to be motivated by the material that they are given and to have a full understanding of the concept(s) that were taught in the lesson. Above all other reasons, it is most important for the student to enjoy their piano lessons and want to come back the next week. Therefore, it is my job as the instructor to inspire them to practice and benefit from each and every lesson. Whether it be vocal or piano instruction, each lesson consists of fun warm-ups, interesting technical exercises, and repertoire of all sorts. What the student learns in 3-6 months depends upon the motivation of the student as well as my ability to teach what the student needs to know in order to achieve their goals as a pianist and/or vocalist. Regarding my methods of instructing piano students, I use the Middle C method for players of all levels. Those who are more advanced use triads as well. My overall goal as a teacher is to work with my students and give them the skills that are necessary to play music that they enjoy.

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in living room; 2 pianos (C2 Yamaha and Steinway upright); organ

*** Specialties ***
Middle C Piano Method using instructional materials of the Bastien's and Alfred Publications

Michael is a great teacher. He focuses on understanding of concepts. For more fluent play we always need to practice a lot, but if we do not understand the concepts behind musical notation, we do not even know where to begin. He is also very encouraging and guides us out of mistakes in a way that the logic sticks. Highly recommended - you will enjoy learning with him

Lessons with Mike Mraz was a Christmas present from my son, Andrew. I enjoy singing, yet have never had occasion to study music or to take private lessons. Mike helped me clarify my goals: breath control, vocal mechanics, reading music and having fun. He graciously sent me some primer materials and located sheet music for several of my favorite Broadway show tunes. Our five 45-minute sessions together were both instructive and enjoyable. As I approach age 70, I can check "work with a voice coach" on my "Bucket List." Kudos for Mike!

I'm so happy that I've found a best piano teacher, Michael. He explains theories clearly. He gives me lots of encouragement during the lesson. I got his email about Triad theory reinforcement and next lesson 2 hours after my lesson. Highly recommend Michael to all retirees like me who love to take piano lessons.

My daughter and I have started taking piano lessons about 3 months back and we are happy to say that our experience learning with Mike has been excellent. He has so much experience which he is able to use to help out novices like us who are just starting to learn. His patience and good humor is what we need the most at this stage. He helps us relax and encourages us to try again and again until we get the hang of it. He sets the pace according to our pace of learning and this helps us stay positive and motivated.

We recommend Mike to all prospective students. I am sure everyone would benefit from lessons with him. We are sure to learn from him for a long time to come if we manage not to overcome his patience.

Starting late

I began with Mike not quite one year ago when in my 60s. I had played a woodwind many years ago, but hadn't played since college and was interested in beginning the piano as a new hobby. Mike has been great to work with. He answers every question of mine with patience and clarity. The pacing of the lessons and assignments is particularly good. He is also flexible when changes have to be made to lessons because of work scheduling. Additionally, he is very easy to get in touch with by phone or text. Having questioned myself as to whether beginning at my age was possible or practical, Mike has certainly answered both with a resounding "yes".

Pleasure to work with

I have been taking singing lessons with Mike for almost 3 months and he has been an absolute pleasure to work with. We both are already starting to see growth in my skills as a singer and I surprise myself at every lesson. Mike is very patient and provides excellent feedback. He is very lively and outgoing which makes each lesson fun and exciting. I am able to work on a variety of songs which include classic, pop and broadway allowing me to learn my strengths and challenges. I would recommend Mike as a vocal teacher.

Mr. Mike is a great teacher.

Having sung most of my life but never having had a sing lesson, Mr. Mike made me feel at ease. He gave me some techniques to work on and worked with me each lesson. Great teacher.

Amazing and caring teacher

Mike is someone I would recommend to anyone with any musical background. Makes every lesson fun. He has many different approaches to helping his students when it comes to learning a new difficult technique or song. Extremely patient, and always encourages you to do better than your best. Can't go wrong with Mike, best of luck!

Coming back to piano after 30 years is fun. Michael is in-tune to the fact that this is a hobby for me and he also helps me learn again, now in A-G vs Do-Sol as I learned when I was a teenager.

Fun and encouraging

Mike is a fun and encouraging teacher, quick to praise but not afraid to point out mistakes and areas to improve. We've been sailing through our lessons and I can see great improvements in my abilities (though practicing at home definitely helps!). I can warmly recommend Mike as a teacher.

Great teacher!

Taking lessons with Mike has been a great experience as a 23-year-old just starting piano. He is incredibly outgoing, friendly, and positive every lesson. I had some previous experience playing another instrument, so he was quick to adapt his teaching style to my needs. The best thing about working with Mike is that he definitely makes the lessons worthwhile by going beyond the book and diving into theory. It's one thing to memorize the songs and fingering, but another to really understand what's going on.Thanks!

I have learnt a lot in the past few sessions with Mr. M. He is great teacher with a good sense of humor. He spents a lot of time on concepts and incorporating them into practices.

Great Teacher

Taking piano lessons from Michael has been a truly great experience. He's a very patient and understanding teacher, but he also has a very deep understanding of music theory, and a great ear for catching mistakes. He seems to take an interest in his students, and is great at praising and raising confidence when it's worthy or necessary, and giving constructive feedback on how to improve. With each lesson, I walk away with something new for the week that I didn't know before, and have made good progress under his direction. I hope to continue taking lessons from him for as long as life allows, as it's difficult to find a music instructor with such a teacher's heart and a genuine desire for his students to grow.

Feedback for Mike

Mike has been extremely helpful in teaching me the fundamentals and dynamics of singing. Having played guitar for years but never attempting to sing, Mike has helped me develop the confidence and step by step approach to growing my vocal ability, within 2 months I was already out playing live open mics and its a lot of fun. Thanks!
