I am a classically trained and professional musician who has worn many different musical hats over the years. I began playing drums when I was 14, in Houston, TX with Craig LeMay, and since then I have learned many different string and world instruments. I studied music theory and vocal performance at the Florence University of the Arts in Italy, taken sitar lessons from Mita Nag in Kolkatta, India, and jazz performance in Austin, TX with Joey Colarusso. I have played in many different bands over the years, such as accompanying Michael Kiwanuka with the musical saw, accompanying Katie Sachs with the musical saw, playing bass guitar with Halaska and DJing private events with Spacecraft Entertainment. I have been teaching music to special education students, in Austin public schools, and foster children with Kids in a New Groove. I have also built and modified many of my own instruments and ready to teach you some quirky musical production skills as well. I believe listening and being adaptable to an individual student's needs are the keys to teaching anyone to express themselves through music.
After studying Spanish for 2 years at the university level and extensive travel to Latin America I am fluent in Spanish in both the academic and conversational sides of the language.
Wedding and event DJ
I am a volunteer music instructor for foster children.
Michael is doing a great job getting me started on my piano journey. The exercises and drills he is teaching me have helped me feel comfortable at the keyboard. I've even learned a song already, after just 2 lessons!
My 8 year old daughter took piano lessons from Michael and she really enjoyed learning the basics in fun ways. He was VERY patient and able to meet her where she was at, but still knew how to challenge her. I would recommend Michael to any beginner level piano player!+ Read More
Really good teacher. I had never played piano before and Michael was great at instantly giving me things to work on and gave off the impression that lessons were tailored to what I was interested in and the direction I personally wanted to go with the piano. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone else looking for a good instructor in piano or any other musical instrument he works with.+ Read More
Michael has helped me a lot with my guitar skills teaching me all sorts of different styles of playing. It's clear he knows a lot about what he's doing and I have noticed a lot of improvement in my guitar skills since I started taking lessons.
My kids started taking lessons with Michael in September 2015. Every step of the way, it's been fantastic. He came by and spent time with all of us before we got started to be sure he understood what the kids wanted to work on. He is always prompt, easy to communicate with, and great with the kids.
I *really* love that he comes to our house and works 1:1 with each kid - it's so convenient for us. But best of all, he has been very patient and encouraging with my 10 year old son, who has ben difficult to motivate. Michael is constantly thinking about how we can motivate him, and Michael is willing to meet him where he is and nudge him to progress. It's no small act of patience, but Michael excels at it.
Finally, it's really, really helpful that my kids can both have the same instructor at the same place, but for different instruments. I highly recommend Michael, and my kids do too!
Michael really helped me develop my ability to communicate effectively when trying to arrange songs with other players.
He's incredibly easy to be around, setting the right mood for students of any experience level to receive instruction, ask questions, and try things out.
Michael provided an amazingly comfortable environment in which I was able to excel as I wrote and recorded a song. He was most encouraging and helpful. With patience and an avidly apparent talent for music, I was inspired and pushed beyond what I thought I was capable of.+ Read More
