I have played piano since age 5 when I began playing by ear. I learned to read music much later in my life and have gone on to work in many different capacities as a pianist in the professional world. I have worked with many cabaret artists as musical director, arranger and accompanist. Most notably, Debbie Boily's "Thank You for the Music"a one woman show with me at the piano, recorded live at Ovations in June 2004 Houston, Texas and subsequently performed in France, England and New York.

I maintain very active performing and teaching careers. I have private voice studios on Long Island and in Manhattan and have taught singers and pianists in every genre of music for the last 27 years. I was on the faculty of New York University in the Music and Music Professions Department for 5 years. I was a coach in the Banff Centre's 'Voice through body and movement' workshop. Throughout my career as a vocal coach, I have worked with many cabaret artists as musical director, arranger and accompanist. Most notably, Debbie Boily's "Thank You for the Music"a one woman show with me at the piano, recorded live at Ovations in June 2004 Houston, Texas and subsequently performed in France, England and New York. Most recently, I recorded an opera with Jazz legend Anthony Braxton and a Jazz CD with Fred Ho. I have recorded operas in progress for Atlantic Records and new works of composers on the BMI label. As a performer I won the prestigious Jessie award for "outstanding performance by an actor in a leading role" for my creation of the Marquis in "120 Songs for the Marquis de Sade" in the world premiere co-produced by Modern Baroque Opera and Vancouver New Music. My international debut was in Sweden, singing the lead role of Director in "Kafka's Chimp" by Welsh composer, John Metcalf. Originally from Hawaii I now reside in New York where I garden and raise chickens. Experience

*** Lesson Details ***
I endeavor to teach you a natural and easy vocal production; to teach you a good solid technique of singing and to help you develop confidence and a polished delivery as a singing artist on and off the stage.
Our work together is an intuitive journey of discovery. Your participation in giving feedback about what you are experiencing during our sessions together as well as what happens in your practice sessions and in your performances is an invaluable tool for us to discover and develop your voice.
Practice: I encourage you to practice 20 minutes a day. An hour is ideal. Singing is like anything that you want to master: it improves with work and investigation. The voice is a curiously individual element of each person and aside from the basics of technique no two voices work the same. Our work together is to develop your unique voice and to discover how it works. Working outside our sessions on a regular basis will help you take ownership of your voice and technique.
Auditions/Performances: Please bring all music that you plan to sing in public to your sessions well in advance of the performance. We need time to investigate the music and its demands together; it will make you more confident and polished in your presentation.
In our Vocal sessions you will learn…
…how to use and blend the entire range of your voice.
… a healthy and free voice management.
1) You want to know what to expect from your vocal instrument on any given note and on any given word.
2) Training makes singing technique second nature; training relieves struggling to get the sound out and allows more focus on the performance.
3) Training allows for more tone coloration, a wider dynamic range, a full use and blending of the registers and greater stamina.
4) Extensive training and practical voice work gives a singer with long-range career aspirations the tools necessary to succeed in an incredibly competitive business. Whether the music is rock, pop, jazz, rhythm and blues, country, musical theater or classical, the trained singer can better meet the demands of a life on the stage as a singer.

Michael is my first and only voice teacher. I came to him because I wanted a more comfortable and confident singing experience. With kind and patient guidance, I am learning to sing like myself and not copy the performance of professional singers on each song. Michael coaxes your personal sound right out of you! Mr. Douglas is phenomenal... very helpful and very supportive. He also makes it a comfortable atmosphere which is helpful for anxious and nervous people (like myself).
Really good choice....
This is the first time daughter is taking singing lessons. I researched and read many bio's on different teachers (not just this site) but something about Michael seemed to stand out in comparison to others. My daughter has only had 4 lessons so far but what an excellent choice we made! His energy and joy are evident and that has a wonderful affect on the lessons. He is kind and uplifting, a positive influence. Coincidentaly, he echo's what we tell our daugter at home, "You can"! Choose Michael as your instructor. You will be happy you did.
I could not have asked for a better teacher. Michael's knowledge is broad and deep and is excellent at explaining things.
He is everything we were looking for as a singing instructor
My son is once again enjoying his singing lessons thanks to Michael!
Excellent Vocal Instructor I Highly Recommend!
As a professional singer, I needed someone that was able to go beyond the basics and address any bad habits I was picking up over the years and begin to work them out to strengthen not only my voice but my performance. Michael is that instructor. He has a GREAT eye and can easily see what your doing and has a awesome sense of how to personally convey instruction so that you pick it up right away and can move on to becoming a better vocalist with good technique. He also has a great ear which is essential for a good instructor in correcting pitch problems or other bad habits that singers tend to inherit. Michael also has a great personality which makes him VERY easy to work with and understand and it's also what makes him a perfect choice for vocal instruction for the beginner just starting out, all the way to the professional who's always striving for perfection!Craigwww.EnergyExpressBand.com
