Piano and Guitar Lessons for Beginning to Intermediate Students of All Ages

I have taught music lessons to dozens of students, from age four to forty-four, in five states over the past decade. I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education, and am a card-carrying member of the American Music Teachers Association (AMTA). My method, and teaching style, is based in a strong foundation of music theory, and the big concepts. I want my students to come away from my lessons, even after only a year, with an understanding of functional harmony, and sight-reading. I am less interested in just learning by rote memorization, and want to impart to my students an internalized understanding of the music they are performing. My method allows for pianists to quickly move into other instruments, as the concepts are universal. All that being said, I do also take a keen interest in piano technique and traditional pedagogy. If you are interested in learning to read, write, and think in music, I am the teacher for you.

    About Michael C.

I began singing in school choirs and playing piano when I was still in elemetary school. By the time I graduated high school, I was teaching lessons and hosting jam-sessions for friends and classmates. I played for tips in local coffee-houses and taprooms, as well as accompanying my high-school's jazz band and assisting with choir rehearsals. I completed my Bachelor's degree in Music Education in Spring of 2020 (in the late days of the before-times) and have been teaching lessons throughout all of this. I firmly believe that it is never too late to get started, and I am experienced in teaching adults as well as children and adolescents. During my time in college, I concurrently enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, and spent several years playing music with the Coast Guard Band in new London, CT. I am not a teacher who is interested in repetition and memorization. If you want to do C-major scale twenty times, do it at home. Our lessons are about learning to read and write in music, and hear music as a musician, and think in music. Some of those concepts you may have heard of, like functional harmony, or the circle of fifths, will be the bread and butter of our lessons. Not only will I have you playing music, and reading music, in no time- I will give you the skills to go on teaching yourself, rather than simply having you copy me week after week.
