My lessons are shaped by my education backgrounds and my teaching experiences. The acronym "CAVE" is a good summary of my lessons:

Communication. Communication is the ultimate goal of language. My classes are rooted in a communicative approach, in which you are the center of this learning process. Topics and activities are designed with real communicative goals. In my Chinese classes, you will mostly hear me speaking Chinese unless the use of English is necessary.

Authenticity. One of the first few English phrases I learned from a textbook is: "How are you? I am fine! Thank you! And you?" However, when I moved to the U.S. I realized that no one really talks like that! Here is another anecdote I would like to share. In the first month of moving to the States, I went to Zaxby's with friends. I was super surprised and excited when I saw "chicken fingers" on the menu. I thought it meant "chicken feet" and that people in the States eat them as well. To my disappointment, my order did not come in the way I had expected. Textbooks help give us a learning guideline, but sometimes fail to mirror the authentic language. In my Chinese classes, I provide extra materials to make sure you know how the language is authentically used in Chinese communities so that you can avoid misunderstandings and misuses (unlike me with English:).

Variety. I use multitude types of technological tools, various forms of learning materials, and learning activities to help you achieve your learning goals.

Interaction. Language is produced in the process of social interaction. Therefore, my classes incorporate many interactive materials and activities that will enhance your interaction with the content materials and with me.

If my "CAVE" model sounds interesting, what are you waiting for? Book a lesson to try it out!

About Mengshi P.

Hi, y'all! I am Mengshi, which means "dream poem" in Chinese. But I go by "Victoria" as I used to be a big fan of David Beckham. Haha.

I am passionate about introducing my native culture and language -- Chinese to folks at all corners of the world. Therefore, even though I am a full-time Chinese instructor in a U.S. university, I want to teach Chinese in the cyber world during my free time as I believe the Web can reach more friends who are interested in learning Chinese.

I am a professional second language educator with over ten years' experience teaching ESL and Chinese to students from different age groups, proficiency levels, and cultural backgrounds. I have a B.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and an M.A. in Second Language Acquisition/TESOL. Currently, I am working on my second master's with a concentration on online teaching -- to explore technological tools that can support your learning experience with me.

I love to travel because I can experience languages and cultures at firsthand. After my trip to Cuba, I made up my mind to learn Spanish. I also love cooking, especially spicy food, and watching movies. In fact, my face-to-face students often get to try my homemade bubble tea and authentic Chinese food while they watch a movie in Chinese. If you are a fan of Chinese food and love watching movies and talking about cultures, why not reaching out to me? 😊
