Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
I emphasize classical technique from a physical perspective, and lessons are sometimes a body awareness workout. Read my profile carefully before you sign up with me. Through this physical approach, we discover what the student's voice truly is, instead of attempting to mimic popular artists.

Singing and Voice lessons must be at least 45min duration.

Customized for individual goals, Singing lessons may include many things. Perhaps your goal is as simple as enjoying the healthy benefits of breathing deeply, strengthening posture, and singing for fun. Senior citizens can take singing lessons for the purpose of remembering old songs while sitting up and breathing. Singing lessons teach proper vocal warm-up, but also emphasize becoming familiar with the many standard songs of various genres.

Absolute beginners are welcome to start out with me, learning to match pitch, and building good habits from the first lessons. Less experienced singers will improve upon their beginning skills, and start learning to let it flow. When more experienced singers realize their chronic technique problems originate in habitual mimicry of other artists, and that they have no idea how to find their own voices, it's time for them to come to me.

Prospective Singing students of all levels MUST read the section Your First Singing Lesson, found on the subject page.
Singing is good for you. Healthy reasons to take singing lessons include deep breathing, balanced posture, relaxation, and abdominal strength. Additional benefits are confidence enhancement, cultural awareness, emotional expression, memory support, and stress relief. Some people sing to share spiritual joy.
/// Your First Singing Lesson \\\
• If you just want a few lessons for fun, tell the teacher.
• A singing lesson is like a private exercise class. Be prepared to move around, making weird sounds and stupid faces. Dress for physical activity, including appropriate shoes. Keep makeup light enough to touch your face and lips. Don't wear anything that covers your neck. Jewelry should not make noise. Keep all fragrances to a strict minimum.
• If you have never had a formal singing lesson, you are a beginning voice student. Formal lessons cover the importance of proper warm-ups, and establishing a healthy singing routine. Microphones and stage apparel are not part of formal singing lessons.
• If you don't want to touch or be touched, say something right away. It is normal for a voice teacher to touch the student's shoulders, throat, face, knees, abdomen, or lower back. It is also normal for a teacher to ask the student to touch the teacher in the same places. You have the right to say no touching.
• Don't eat a big meal two hours before a lesson, and don't drink anything carbonated right before one. Get used to the idea of passing gas or belching during a singing lesson, because it's common. The teacher should have tissues ready for drooling or sneezing.
• If you don't practice at least 30 minutes every other day, you can still take lessons and learn music, but it will take much longer to become a better singer. To learn relaxation techniques and build strength, coordination, and muscle memory, you have to actually practice. Singers can't buy our instruments; we learn to build, repair, and maintain our voices.

Show up to your first singing lesson in comfortable exercise clothes and no perfume. Have a way to take notes, and be willing to try almost anything. Good luck!

I teach adult students private music lessons. My specialty and approaches are
(1) classical vocal technique from a body awareness perspective,
(2) how to sight-read keyboard scores, and
(3) music theory translated into something that makes sense.

I am Miss Melodie F, a highly experienced private lesson teacher of voice, piano, and theory. Read my profile carefully before you sign up with me. Complete beginners are welcome. Advanced lessons are available for singing and voice only.

Singing and Voice
Singing and voice lessons have minimum 45min duration. Do you want to do the physical work it takes to become a better singer? Do you have a place to practice? Are you sure you know what a singing lesson is like? Have you read the "Your First Singing Lesson" section found on each Singing or Voice Subject Page and still want to take singing lessons with me? If you can’t say “Yes” to all of these things, I can still work with you. Sign up for Music Theory lessons instead, tell me what you want to learn, and we can go from there.

Do you have regular access to a “real” piano, with weighted keys and a damper pedal? If all you have is an unacceptable keyboard, sign up for Music Theory and I can still teach you how to read keyboard music, and play scales, chords, and songs by ear.

Music Theory
Music theory lessons are the most flexible option for general curiosity. You don't need much more than pencil and paper to start music theory lessons. Tell me what you’re interested in, and I’ll teach it from a Music Theory perspective.

The current fee for a 45min lesson appointment in my studio is $41. Online singing and theory lessons are the same price. Lessons must be prepaid, with a strict 24hr cancellation deadline. Schedule-As-You-Go lessons with no recurring schedule slot are an option, if you prefer that to taking a lesson the same time every single week.

My teaching studio is a residential office on a high second floor walk-up near the intersection of Chicago and Ashland. I might be able to travel within East Village / Ukrainian Village / Wicker Park / Noble Square for an additional $15 travel fee. If I travel to your location, we can negotiate younger ages and group fees.

Upfront deal breakers:
• I have a problem with fragrances. If I can smell something on you, I may not be able to work with you. We could discuss online lessons as an alternative.
• One quietly observing adult human guest is welcome with 48-hour notice.
• If you are a singing student, you need a place where you can practice, and you must read the Your First Singing Lesson section prior to your first cancellation deadline.
• If you don’t have regular access to something that can legally be called a piano, including weighted keys and a damper pedal, don’t take Piano lessons.

Ask me a question using the Ask-A-Question feature. Watch my videos and think about it. I'm a good teacher. I sincerely appreciate the time it took you to read my profile. Thank you.

Self-employed musician
Aug 1972 - Present

My teaching experience began when I was the Junior Choir director at my family church as a young teen (also the summer organist, BTW). Armed with a Coe College Bachelor of Music and a Performance Certificate in Vocal Performance from 1981, I chose to work in Costa Rica 1982-1984 before calling Chicago home in 1986. My musical endeavors in Chicago have included over eighteen years of private lesson teaching, seven years of sight-reading Episcopal High Mass as the soprano section leader, five years in semi-pro choral chamber ensembles, playing in a volunteer flute orchestra, occasional professional classical singing "gigs," participation in Sacred Harp singing, one full classical vocal recital, and one shared program of classical & theater songs & duets.

So far I've only had one lesson with Melodie and she really cares to help you achieve what you're trying to accomplish. We went through a few things such as posture, how to breathe, humming, vowels, position of tongue and other things. About myself: I don't know how to sing and this is my first singing lesson.

My lessons with Melodie have been great! She is extremely knowledgeable. I'm a new piano player, and she has been very patient with me as we work our way through the basics. She is great at explaining the theory side in a way I can understand. And the out of class work she suggests not only drives home what we worked on in the lesson, but it also has me playing some basic songs...which is encouraging and keeps practice fun!

We did a lot of breathing exercises that's going to help me be a better singer. We also did some exercises that'll eventually help me hit the notes I want to hit. I'm liking it so far.

Melodie is a life-long musician whose deep knowledge and experience I enjoyed the benefit of while I was studying music theory in college. She had a knack for picking the perfect example and explanation to help understand concepts. She also made music come to LIFE when she would sing! Quite honestly, her talent and skills intimidated me - but she always was willing to share her JOY OF MUSIC without judgement. She always encouraged me to not just play music, but to FEEL the music, and pass that feeling to the audience. She doesn't just do this for a living. It is her passion - and it shows in the ongoing quality of her work.

My lessons with Melodie are everything I hoped they would be. I had the goal of finding my vocal range, defining what type of singer I could be, and developing my voice. She has exceeded all my expectations and I am learning quick. She's very patient, teaches in an easy to understand method, and has a great attitude. Best of all, we have a blast together! I look forward to each and every one of our lessons. Melodie clearly is a practiced instructor and it seems that she would be able to find an effective way to teach anyone. I definitely recommend Melodie!

Great results!

I've have a number of other voice teachers in the the past and have had mixed results and made some progress. Since I started working with Melodie, I have grown so much as a singer and musician. She has greatly improved my vocal intonation, breath control and vocal range. When we work on a particular piece of music her input for better interpretation has always been right on the mark and I am better able to convey the message of the music. in short working with Melodie has allowed me to find my true singing voice. I will be forever grateful to her for her superb musical guidance.
