Piano

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Music and Piano Performance at The Juilliard School studying with legendary pedagogue and Chair of Piano Dr. Veda Kaplinsky. I've traveled the musical world and studied with several of the world's most sought after pianists, including Sergei Babayan, mentor of international piano star Daniil Trifonov, as one of eight students worldwide accepted to his final Babayan International Piano Academy. I've performed with the Seattle Symphony amongst other concerts with orchestras in Europe, and perform regularly as a soloist in the greater NYC area and Seattle at venues including Carnegie Hall. Since beginning my teaching career, I've looked forward to sharing my knowledge with young students in order to nurture their artistic talents and unique musical sense. Students will be able to perceive piano not only as a skill and genuinely enjoyable activity, but also as the most sincere and effective form of emotional expression and as a friend with whom cathartic conversation can be held. I will personally develop the sensitivity in their ears, their virtuosic capacity, methods to quickly learn music without wasting hours of time, their technical ability to manipulate the instrument in both color and tone, and most importantly, a profound, lifelong love for piano music.

I am currently a second-year undergraduate student at The Juilliard School in New York City, where I study with the Susan W. Rose Chair of Piano Department, Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky and Hung-Kuan Chen; my history with the institution dates back to Juilliard Pre-College, where I graduated as a Juilliard Scholarship recipient. In addition to my formal musical education in classical piano, I'm also a graduate of the Lakeside School in Seattle, a highly selective, college preparatory school offering a rigorous academic program; notable alumni include Bill Gates, Paul Allen and the McCaw brothers. I am well-versed and fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese. I am well accustomed to working with young children, adolescents and teenagers along with the elderly in retirement homes, and hope to nurture and instill in each of my students a genuine, individualized passion for music, along with imparting to each student all the knowledge I've attained over 15 years of musical experience off and on stage, playing at the world's most acclaimed venues and studying with some of the world's most sought after pedagogues. I've taught many years privately in the greater Seattle area, as a private teacher at the Aspen Music Festival and as a private teacher serving the NYC area since 2015. My students have won regional and international competitions for young people, and have performed at prestigious venues such as Benaroya Hall, Alice Tully @ Lincoln Center, the Kauffman Center, Foundation LV in Paris, and Carnegie Hall.

Max is the most amazing teacher I’ve ever met. And I teach for a living. I am 45 years old. I got piano lessons when I was an elementary and junior high school student for approximately 4 years. Although I liked playing piano, I’d thought that I didn’t have enough talent, in terms of technical skill and emotional expression. In my first lesson, Max taught me how to use my wrist and elbow to make lighter sounds, as well as how to practice in a certain way in order to produce crystal clear sounds for trills and in faster parts, by making a proper space between notes. I never before understood these points and others, despite teaching by others. More importantly, he helped me to be confident in expressing my emotion in my playing. I realized that practicing piano is such a delightful process to be connected to my life memories and to liberate all my emotion attached to them. This is like a therapeutic process. His teaching makes my life more artistic and meaningful. I really appreciate his deep passion for teaching. It is clearly his mission. He is a true teacher, who wants to help people grow as artists in their own right. I just wish that I met him earlier. But I am glad that it is not late for me.
