    About Mattie K.

"Mattie is the best viola teacher in the world" says my six year old son. I also am a student and really appreciate taking lessons with Mattie. She is thorough and focussed and pays close attention to each student. I like her whole body approach to teaching proper form and am unlearning and learning a lot. - Rachel, adult viola student - I am a passionate arts advocate and teacher, and am here to help you bring your musical goals to life! I am a conservatory trained violist, with over a decade of teaching experience. My true love is classical chamber music, but I also have toured internationally with indie rock bands. I specialize in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a method for teaching rhythmic movement as well as physical and instrumental improvisation. My expectation of the student is that they are enthusiastic about their lessons and willing to put in the demanding work that is necessary to fine tune their artistry. Together we will decide on pieces and goals according to your technical abilities and musical interests. For younger students, parents will have a role in the success of their child’s music education. Performing opportunities will be available since it is my philosophy that music is a gift that should be shared.

Dalcroze Education offers a hands-on approach to music theory in which students explore musical concepts such as meter, tempo, phrasing, form, and dynamics through rhythm games, creative movement, songs, stories, ear training, sight-singing, and improvisation. Students are brought into the music through personal and physical experience, sequentially feeling, identifying, vocalizing, and finally applying to instruments. The Dalcroze Method was developed in the early 20th century by the Swiss composer, musician and educator Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, who believed that rhythm is a vital element of the teaching of music. Known as "music training through movement," Dalcroze uses the body to develop a strong musical foundation and natural feel for music. Mattie has a Dalcroze Certificate from Carnegie Mellon University, and currently serves as the President of the New York chapter of the Dalcroze Society of America.

Based on the artistic and pedagogical principles of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, the Dalcroze approach teaches an understanding of music's fundamental concepts, expressive meanings, and deep connections to other arts and activities.
