The bass line is the most important part of any piece of music. As bassists we hold the orchestra or band together, rhythmically and tonally. That said we must begin by learning basics of rhythm, how to make a good tone, and note reading.

Because bass is the largest of the string instruments it requires a certain amount of physicality. I begin teaching from the feet up, you must have a firm grounding in the earth (or floor) as a foundation, from there we will build good posture, which in turn leads to good sound production.

These are the basics, if you are already an advanced student we can work together on more advanced exudes, double bass concertos or orchestral excerpts.

I play both French and German bows and teach both.

About Matthew W.

Hi there, my name is Matthew Weber. I am a double bass and electric bass teacher. I hold a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College.

I am currently co-principal bassist of the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, assistant principal bassist of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the North Czech Capella (North Czech Chamber Ensemble).

I have performed with the New Jersey, Richmond, Portland (ME), Riverside, Greenwich, and Virginia Symphony Orchestras, as well as the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, New Jersey Festival Orchestra, Orchestra New England, and toured France, England, Belgium, Russia, Germany and China.

As a devoted teacher I have taught through the Goldman Fellowship for Arts Enrichment (Juilliard), as well as the Music Advancement Program, a program for talented young musicians at the Juilliard School.

Between 2012 and 2015 I held a bass faculty position at the Turtle Bay Music School, and from 2015-2016 was double bass and chamber music faculty at the Luzerne Music Center.

I have served as a performing associate, and teaching assistant to bassist Kurt Muroki at the Bowdoin International Music Festival.

I have performed at the BBC Proms, Look & Listen Festival, MATA Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Luzerne Music Center, and the Lake George Music Festival. In addition to classical music I am equally comfortable playing double bass and electric bass in many other genres.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical double bass. I teach (and play) both French and German bow. I also have a background in jazz and rock bass playing and can teach both of those styles on electric bass and upright bass.
