    About Matthew L.

Hey there. My name's Matt, I'm a Boston native who went far far away to LA for music school. Now back in the Allston/Brighton area and looking for students. Professional gigging/recording experience, a wide and eclectic taste for music, and a love for helping students "grok" a new technique or piece of music. Guitar students can expect a two-pronged approach to my lessons: one half dedicated to development of proper technique, the other half putting that technique to use, creating music. We will focus on the essential habit and routine of practicing. With good practice, any student can expect to see marked improvement week-to-week. As a teacher I have experience teaching to all different ages and experience levels. The point of music is to enjoy it, and so ultimately our lessons are tailored to helping students do that. Still, expect a certain level of rigor to our lesson plans. The way to learn is to play, and my students will be expected to learn and play music assigned to them, their performance of which will determine if and when they get to move on to next lessons. I have a Bachelors of Music from the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, where I majored in Studio/Jazz guitar. This was also the beginning of my teaching career, teaching friends and fellow students. As a professional musician I have played everything from original rock'n'roll to side-man gigs with hip-hop and R&B artists and beyond. My jazz training as well as personal interest in jazz fusion, alternative country, and other 'out' genres has given me a wide trick bag with which to play and create. As a teacher, that same multiversity has given me a certain understanding of how seemingly complicated "maneuvers" on an instrument can seem daunting or incomprehensible. My favorite teaching moment is when I can make the complicated simple for a student. As a musician personally I'm currently writing with a psychedelic rock outfit, as well as still writing and recording via email and other means with collaborators back in LA. I look forward to meeting you and making music together!
