Overview

Hi, prospective student. I'm Matt. I've been playing the drums for 19 years and teaching for over 15.

My drumming career started at the age of 11, when I first began performing in front of audiences in a folk band. Shortly after, I branched out to as many genres as possible: country, pop, punk, rock, brass band, metal, blues, progressive, and drumming for musicals in theaters. By the age of 14, I had attained one of the highest drumming qualifications available in the UK, a Grade 8 in Drums, and went on to further that two years later with a Performance Certificate. I was selected as the percussion leader in my high school's 'Elite Band' also at 14, performing in prestigious theaters both in the UK and abroad.

I began teaching at the age of 14. My teaching philosophy has always been to tailor lessons to a student's goals in a friendly, supportive, yet challenging way. I bring an incredibly diverse and deep knowledge of drumming from my 18 years of performing in a great variety of genres.

For the beginner, you may simply want to try the drums out. That's great! I'm here to help you fall in love with the drums. For students who have some experience, we will work on whatever is challenging you. Perhaps you want to work on poly-rhythms, double bass drum technique, hand technique, rudiments, fills, or maybe you want to learn some songs. Perhaps you want to make drumming your career and get into a music program at college. Whatever your goals are, I'm here to guide you.

Please ensure you have an electronic/acoustic drum kit at your house (and understanding neighbors!).

I have taught students in both the school and private setting, child to adult, beginner to advanced. I hope to speak with you soon and have the pleasure of teaching you.

Matthew is a warm, friendly and terrifically talented drum tutor who is able to teach anyone from complete beginner to advanced players of all ages.

Having worked with Matthew professionally for over 5 years, it is clear that he is a very reliable and dependable individual who can bring out the most in your drumming.

Whether you want to play at home for fun, strive to be onstage with bands or want to take your drumming to a professional level, Matthew is the drum teacher I would recommend over anyone.

Matt was the best drum teacher I ever had. He worked with me at a comfortable pace, exactingly learnt and taught me the songs I wanted to try, and introduced me to a range of genres and styles that helped refine my overall technique.

Everything he taught me has carried me through two successful live and studio bands - his own experiences with live and studio performance are a great addition to his character, complementing his approach to teaching and wider percussive knowledge.

As you'll recognise immediately upon meeting him, he's a friendly, understanding and dedicated teacher who takes your goals seriously and pushes you just enough to achieve your best.

Friendly and passionate drum teaching focused to your goals

Matthew Fisher is both a talented, experienced drummer; as well as being a passionate, friendly teacher.

I received tuition for around three years from Matt (before I left for University), and I found the experience invaluable. I started with just an interest in drumming, and ended up with a talent and hobby that I still continue to enjoy today. Matt took me through buying a kit, learning the basic beats and rudiments, writing and reading music, playing to music that I enjoy and also broadening the appeal of other genres such as Jazz and Latin drumbeats. In fact I went from being a metal-junkie to being a fan of all music that had an interesting beat!

Matt's teaching style is laidback and friendly, but at the same time focused to achieving your personal goals. For example I was particularly interested in getting to grips with double-bass, so we started by writing some double bass beats that I could perfect and extend on for our next session. On starting each new topic Matt would often perform a short solo as a kind of demonstration of how the skills I would be learning next could be applied, to make them not only interesting but practical (also it is pretty amazing to see Matt show off his talents).

I could not recommend Matt's services highly enough. If you are looking for a friendly and passionate drum teacher who really wants you to learn the way you want and develop the skills you require, then Matthew Fisher is your man!
