About Mat B.
I am a professional freelance horn player living in Sneads Ferry, NC. I studied with Dr. Charles Kavalovski, former Principle Horn for the Boston Symphony; and Herb Winslow and Brian Jensen, both of the Minnesota Orchestra. I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities with a bachelors of music in French horn performance.
I'm also a retired U.S. Marine Musician. I've traveled across the globe performing in every clime and place for thousands of people. I've performed with all caliber of musicians ranging from high school graduates to musicians in major symphony orchestras.
I'm currently a charter member and performer with the Wilmington Symphonic Winds, the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, and the Wilmington Ballet Company in their seasonal Nutcracker performance every year.
My philosophy in teaching horn [and in life] is that anything worth doing well is first worth doing badly until you know what to do. If you're willing to put forth effort and patience then I assure you progress and improvement will be yours in good time.
I use the Carmine Caruso Method in my practice along with the teachings of Farkas, Singer, Maxime-Alphonse, and Kopprasch. I can teach students to read music. I can also teach music theory and ear training. For the intermediate and advanced students, we can prepare for solo and ensemble competitions and college or military music auditions.
One of my favorite quotes I heard from a conducting friend of mine was that, "technique is only important if you don't have any." Well, let's develop your technique and your musical ear together. I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your goals in becoming a better musician!
