I began playing piano at the age of 3 1/2 by ear, listening to music of the 1960s such as The Beatles and Broadway musicals. When I was 15, I started 2 years of classical lessons, and, because my ear was so well developed, was given the opportunity to learn Fur Elise by Beethoven at my second lesson. I had begun teaching the piece to myself after hearing it played on a movie soundtrack. I began my studies at Berklee College of Music in 1979, taking jazz piano and vocal lessons, as well as classes in ear training, theory, and arranging, along with various ensembles and labs. Following my years at Berklee, I played in a number of different bands and had a record produced on which I wrote and sang 4 songs, arranged background vocals, and played piano. This recording received Northeast regional airplay and was one of the highlights of my musical career.  I have been teaching piano in the Capital District of New York since 1997, with students ranging in age from 4 to 71, and of various playing levels and musical styles. I also teach General Music at a private elementary school.

I have over 50 years of playing experience and have been teaching piano to beginners and intermediate players in the Capital District since 1997. I look forward to hearing from you to start or enhance your musical experience.

I took lessons with Mary Ann Barker for many years. I have learned many pieces with her, including Beethoven’s Für Elise and Piano Man by Billy Joel. She is a great teacher and I highly recommend taking lessons with her for anyone interested in learning piano.

I am 61 years  old, work full-time and have limited time for practicing.  I have had 2 previous piano teachers who do not compare to Mary Ann’s level of thoroughness and patience, and ability to diagnose an issue I am having, offering an easy fix, making learning to read music much easier. Most times, it’s a matter of slowing down, setting the metronome to a slower speed. She does not rush me.   I “show up” and she encourages and teaches me to have fun.

My 2 10 years old boys have been studying piano for  over 3 years. MaryAnn is a great teacher and fabulous with kids

Mrs. Barker has done a wonderful job pivoting to remote lessons.  Our son is enjoying it and thriving.

My grandson has been taking lessons for two year and his progress has been excellent.

I am new to the piano and MaryAnn has been very patient, allowing me to move at a comfortable pace.

Mrs. Barker has been very accommodating to our kids needs and differences in abilities.  It has been a wonderful experience seeing how much they have improved.
