It took moving to Brooklyn and embarking on a career as a Gypsy jazz singer to finally bring electronica into the mix…” - The Washington Post Opera and Gypsy jazz singer turned audio engineer turned award-winning pop vocalist and songwriter Alarke’s music is an exciting, vibey, future-forward meld of pop, electronic, classical, jazz, and world music. Fans of Grimes, Charli XCX, and Lady Gaga: take a listen. Her debut EP Midas (2012) landed her New Artist of the Year and Best Debut Album with the Washington Area Music Association. The Lark (2013), won the Grand Prize with the Washington Area Music Association for her song, “Lionheart.” Grace (2016) features electronic x pop x krautrock x chillwave music x Gypsy jazz music. Elkin + Alarke (2016), a tropical electronic album released with producer Elkin Pautt had songs go to NBC's World Of Dance. Cuba Diaries (2021) showcases songs written in Havana, Cuba that were recorded by a 6-piece all-star Cuban band in Havana. Real Down, Mystics, and Future Self (singles, 2021) are electronic dance tracks featuring fun synths and driving dance beats. A flagship program of Strathmore’s Institute for Artistic and Professional Development, the Artist in Residence (AIR) program was created in 2005 to support artists as they transition to professional careers. Since its inception, the program has mentored 94 musicians ages 16 to 32. Every year, a class of six is chosen after a competitive selection process. Strathmore’s AIR benefit from the support of mentor musicians, participate in professional development seminars, and are offered extensive performance opportunities throughout the 10-month program.
