RE: Advanced Classical Singers (College and older...and in some cases High School)

ALL CLASSICAL SINGERS after time will slowly chip away at all languages and classical styles. It depends on the level. Fach presentation is important. We will pick out relevant arias that reflect this. Mozart, Bel Canto, French, German, American Opera etc; (ARIAS only).

For some, we will want to have a mix of arias and art songs in Italian, French, German and English (minimum).

Having representation in all languages is important so you are ready for any audition requirement.

RE: Young Classical Singers (Middle School-High School)

Serious classical singers of all voice types will work from the 24 Italian Arias book.

Other repertoire depends on voice type & development expectations/goals.

Young sopranos will get some Debussy Chansons as it sits quite a bit higher & it's great for technique. With young mezzos, we will find pieces that address the chest & mixed voice head-on. Sometimes we will even dabble in Musical Theater to work on this.

Young boys dealing with the voice change can vary quite a lot due to the unpredictability. As the voice expands we will find repertoire that helps them settle into their new sound which can also be Musical Theater accompanied with 24 Italian Arias. The more settled they become, the more repertoire available.

Young, fully developed tenors and/or baritones will do 24 Italian Arias & American Art Songs(Baritones) or French Chansons (Tenors) to develop color & understanding of fach.

60 minute lesson would be:

20 minutes of warmups
20 minutes of one of the 24 Italian Arias (or more advanced aria)
20 minutes of another Italian aria or another appropriate piece

30 minute lesson would be:

15 minutes of warmups
15 minutes of one of the 24 Italian arias

About Mary V.

Hello everyone! I hope you all are staying healthy and safe during this pandemic!

If you are interested in online music lessons, consider me, as I've been teaching online for the past 3 years and in schools for over 8 years.

I've mainly taught voice but have been teaching violin, ukulele, and guitar as well.

I take voice of all levels but do prefer advanced or committed beginners. I love working with people who have strong musicianship or strong work ethics!

Please note, I prefer serious students and/or serious parents.

Great news! As of August 2020, I'll be starting my Master's Degree at Hochschule Für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany. Although I've sung a significant amount in Eastern Europe & Russia, I'm looking forward to getting a foothold in Germany and establishing myself long-term there.

I'll elaborate on my String & Education experience first, however, if you are an advanced singer, please scroll down to see info about my singing experience.

I WAS a professional violinist but only play for fun now (see youtube link to my playing). With that said, I have a lot of experience conducting beginner orchestras, bands etc; I am fantastic working with beginning string players (particularly violinists) and can really jump start that process. I can work with them until they are solidly intermediate as it was my principal instrument for a long time. It's important for them to enjoy the lessons in the beginning so they make it that far :)

In my profile you will find multiple links to example lessons (unlisted links). Please check them out if you are curious about how an online lesson works. There's also lots of videos of my singing, playing and teaching.

About my experience more specifically:

I'm a performer and a very experienced, certified, professional Music Educator. I'm a professional singer as well (will get into that later).

I want to highlight my education experience first as I believe that's what sets me apart from the other profiles.

I've worked in multiple schools running ambitious music programs for roughly 7 years (starting in my early twenties). I'm used to working in an environment where results are necessary and must be delivered internally and publically. The International Schools, in particular, have large budgets and expect results that reflect that budget. My teaching approach is goal-oriented and it's important to me to have students who are interested in working that way. If you are looking for a casual approach (you want me to listen to you sing karaoke and say "good job" to stroke your ego) then move on! I say that warmly as I just prefer more serious students. It would be better for both of us! With that said, my students and I have a blast in our lessons!

Most of my students are preparing for college/performing arts hs auditions, All-State, Districts, Musicals, Summer programs etc; OR they are serious and doing it for fun. I even have some people who sang professionally, quit who are now freshening up their skills again.

If you want to have fun and ACTUALLY improve, keep reading.

3 years ago, I happily transitioned from teaching full time in classrooms to singing full time & teaching privately part-time. I love vocal pedagogy and I love helping people find their voice.

I left teaching in classrooms because to be a freelance artist you must have that flexibility and availability. I have quite a lot of singing lined up this summer (2020) and am so sad to think it may be canceled. Fingers crossed. Upcoming performances include Mimi in La Boheme (Morelia Young Artist, Mexico) and Charlotte in Der Diktator (Opera Veto, Estonia)

My strengths as an educator are obvious but the fact that I am performing regularly & studying my craft constantly puts me in a unique position. My main teacher is from the Curtis Institute and the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia so I am truly working with some of the best!

Many of my students are serious and those are the kind I prefer. That can be serious as far as taking the profession seriously but it also includes people who do it for "fun" but take the task of improving seriously. I've had many people come to me after being frustrated about having a lack of progress with other singing teachers. It truly is another pandemic in the Music Education world...singing is a natural thing, but that doesn't mean everyone knows how to teach it. Lots of people sing well and just throw their name up knowing how to teach-solving vocal issues, improving range, power etc; and really they just end up doing damage, or worse, wasting your time and money.

Another thing: you do not need to sing opera if you study with me. Opera, however, requires an extreme understanding of technique to sing over an orchestra. This insight can be extremely valuable to students in any genre.

Please see specific lesson descriptions to understand how each lesson would be structured and be sure to check out the links in my profile to example voice lessons.

You are welcome to write me with questions anytime. I recommend to those interested in trying to consider buying a 5 thirty minute lesson package as we can combine them to make three 45m lessons. It's the cheapest way to properly give this a go and see if it's for you.

Thank you so much I hope to hear from you soon.

As an inexperienced singer, Mary is helping me find my voice, and so far, I love it! She is very clear and concise when it comes to teaching, and there is a level of expectation when it comes to practicing, which I love, as it holds me accountable for my progress.

I am a college student going into my first year as a music major and Mary has been extremely helpful! I started voice lessons coming from a choral background and Mary was able to help me better understand the qualities of my voice and helped me make my technique more consistent. She has also recommended many great arias and pieces for me to work on to expand my repertoire. Overall, I feel much more prepared for college and confident as a vocalist due to these lessons!

Mary is a fantastic teacher for advanced students! She has a scholarly approach to pedagogy informed by her years of training, international performance experience, and encyclopedic knowledge of music and musicians. I already had 25 years of experience singing classical music before starting lessons with Mary, and she is helping me polish my technique and introducing me to new and challenging material. If you’re trying to find a great teacher for advanced vocal music, you should take lessons with Mary.

Mary was exactly the kind of teacher I was looking for. I’m an advanced mezzo soprano with a strong voice. Mary was able to give me some very precise exercises and instruction to open my voice even more and fine tune my pitch. Other teachers have given me more generic instruction, but I felt that Mary gave me more direct feedback and exercises for my voice. If you’re serious about your voice, Mary is a great teacher.

My name is Ella, I am a 14 year old girl going into high school and I have a passion for singing. Mary Vaillancourt is my voice teacher and she helped so much with my singing! She has taught me so much in our lessons, since I started taking them I have found that I can sing so much higher and clearer. I have also learned how to sing louder. Mary helped me discover the true potential in my voice through classical and broadway songs. I am so grateful to have such an amazing voice teacher and I definitely recommend her to others!

I am an adult and have wanted to learn how to play the violin for many years, since I am able to work from home- I decided to invest in online lessons, Mary provides very specific and helpful feedback, she is encouraging, she has helped me to understand the basics to build a strong foundation, I practice between 2-3 times weekly (30 minutes at a time), the difficulty level has progressed along with my skills, she is able to demonstrate techniques, Mary has helped me to fine tune my own abilities, I am left handed so use of the bow has been more tricky for me- she was able to guide me through this difficulty and explained how I should be practicing in order to improve my skill level, I am enjoying learning a new instrument and look forward to advancing my proficiency with the violin, I enjoy the lessons- helps me to think differently- I have always enjoyed having music in my life

I'm a professional opera singer, and sang with Mary last autumn. She's a remarkable performer of extraordinary capacity and talent. Our cast of international professional soloists were all amazed - large voices with such accomplished technique are hard to come by nowadays! She even gave me small pointers that made a huge difference immediately - looking forward to more of those, and to singing together in Estonia!

Highly recommended!

I have had a wonderful time training with Mary over the past couple of weeks. She's been very patient with me during our lessons, and she is very helpful with information in and out of the lessons.
I was hesitant to take some lessons at first because I hadn't sung for a while. There was a point when I was in a choir group in school, I was passionate enough to compete against other schools. But after I graduated, I wasn't able to find time to further practice my singing skills. Signing up to take lessons with her has restored my voice a lot, as well as teach me new things to make my voice more clear. I've had a wonderful time learning from Mary and hope to take more lessons with her in the future. For anyone looking for a professional, serious chance to train your voice for the better, Mary would be your best option.

Mary is great!! I sang in high school and college but had gotten out of practice and it pained me to hear myself sing. I have loved working with Mary! Every time we meet something clicks back into place and I hear a big difference. She chooses great music (Adina) and thinks through the warm ups and techniques specifically for my voice. She is honest and gives great feedback. She is constantly learning and is clearly devoted to improvement in herself and her students.
I highly recommend her to anyone interested in classical voice.

Mary is a really great teacher and is very helpful if you want to pursue singing as a possible career path, as she teaches you techniques to help improve your voice rather than just teaching songs.

When I started taking lessons I couldn't match pitch that well and was kinda self-conscious about my voice. Now, I can match pitches a lot better, is more confident, and gotten bigger parts in shows.

Posted Dec 15, 2019

I took voice lessons a few years ago but did not feel like I was making the improvements I wanted. I felt like I had reached my voice ceiling limits and very much discouraged by my inability to wrangle aspects of my singing. But despite that, I still wanted to see if I could improve, even just a little.

So I sought out Mary for her emphasis on technique. After a few sessions with her, I am beginning to see improvement and progress that felt elusive to me. She completely blew my misconceptions out of the water and reassured me that I have potential and even more room to grow in my singing (voice ceiling shattered).

If you are serious about improving your singing and committed to putting in the time, Mary is the teacher for you. Not only is she a phenomenal professional singer, but she is also also a fantastic teacher. She draws from experience and but also knows how to clearly communicate her extensive knowledge of technique and how the voice works. Mary is very patient, encouraging, and knows how to provide constructive feedback to help you get to your goals and beyond.

Mary is an excellent teacher and has helped me progress considerably as a singer, enhancing my technique in preparation for shows and concerts I performed in. She helped me better understand my own voice and vocal range, helping me discover that I was a natural baritone, rather than a tenor. She is highly skilled, enthusiastic, and always came well prepared for lessons ready to tackle new challenges - I would highly recommend her as a teacher!

I first met Mary some 6 years ago as a teenager in high school. I didn't have a strong background in music, but over the years of working with her she has very much helped me get over a lot of the struggles I've had. The number one thing being that she helped me understand that I was not actually a baritone as my school had always labeled me, but a tenor. I had trouble even hitting a Tenor E4 when I first started and now I can extend up to D5 fairly consistently. She's not only fun to work with, but has a great ear for what's going wrong and how to fix it. She's helped me with a lot of my auditions and I owe a lot of my personal success to how hard she's pushed me and how she's given me the confidence to do music that I never thought I could do. She is one of the best teachers you will ever find. I've worked with several voice instructors but none of them ever felt as impactful. Highly recommend Mary to everyone looking to improve their singing.

Mary was my first singing teacher and honestly, I could not have asked for anyone better. She taught me everything from the blindingly obvious basics of vocal technique to the more subtle nuances of history and context behind pieces. She also taught vocal technique in a very intuitive way, so that you always knew where the sound came from and how every slight change in posture or mouth shape affected the quality and character of sound.

Her singing lessons have been truly invaluable to me and are the reason I still actively sing today. Thanks to her that I was also able to get a singing scholarship at my uni.

Mary started teaching my daughters when she was in Maine after a friend recommended her. When she returned to Bulgaria, they started online lessons, which have been convenient and successful. Mary has gone above and beyond, offering online warm ups before auditions and additional support during solos. Mary has been instrumental in helping them step outside their comfort zone, in our aging them to audition whenever possible to get more experience. She balances the wants of my teenager to sing more pop music with the enthusiasm to encourage them to also try more challenging music.
