About You for Take Lessons

I have enjoyed the challenge of assisting music students for over 30 years with ALL kinds of styles/literature/repertoire. I provide training for classical, broadway, contemporary, folk, pop music, sacred music styles and love to encourage jazz and gospel stlyes too.

I create a course of study to fit individual student interests and needs. My relationship with my students is a two-way street; I often learn from them as we explore their interest in God's wonderful gift of music!

Teaching at various private schools, including theater school and directing both contemporary praise bands and traditional church choirs has provided enjoyable contrasts for me.

Before teaching teens and adults, I taught elementary music in public schools for 10 years and trained university interns, followed by work as a vocal graduate assistant at the University of South Florida. I hold both a Music Education and an M.A. in Vocal Performance with Voice, Choral, Music Education and Piano Pedagogy emphasis.

I have adjudicated for the Florida Vocal Association Solo and Ensemble Festivals and the National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions. Former students are pursuing careers as performers, composers, music teachers and music ministers ..........and singing to their babies!

Piano Study

I provide a variety of instruction: Classical, Traditional and Worship Chords/Chord Chart approach with Improvisation.

Lessons and curriculum are tailored to the students abilities and interests.Note reading and/or chord chart playing, classical or popular music with beginning improvisation skills can be pursued.
However, beginners should understand that there are skills everyone needs to begin with to progress into any style.

I incorporate duet playing to enhance beginner songs and to teach ensemble playing at all levels.
Most of my students pursue piano for their own enjoyment or for ensemble, church and social gatherings. However, because of 2 years of piano study at the University level, I am very comfortable with those who wish to prepare for competition and advanced study.

I teach private lessons to ages 8 & up.
For Younger Students I offer 4 Music Enrichment small classes with guardians in the SUMMER, with a more play-like approach to music readiness activities; such as movement songs developing steady beat, rhythm awareness, finger dexterity and form. The 4 hour long classes are the same charge as 2 half hour private lessons.

Vocal Study

Vocal students often come wanting to sing the current Pop or Rock songs they sing along wit . Although I will use these songs for competitions or fun pieces, these popular songs often don't lend themselves to vocal study very well. Even Pop and Rock singers study with the classics of Jazz, Pop and Broadway to develop their voice. I am best versed at literature from Classical, Broadway, Classic Pop and Jazz, Folk, Traditional Sacred and Contemporary Christian Styles.

We are beautifully and wonderfully made in such a way that certain foundational, physical aspects of singing will help everyone. I teach the foundations for a physiologically correct technique that enhances every style. This has helped all singers, including those who are experiencing discomfort when they sing.

Singing is as natural to me as speaking but I wasn't always this way. That's why I love to help anyone become comfortable or better at expressing themselves through singing. Vocal students of all levels, beginning to advanced, are welcome.

Singing is a very individual thing and I approach each student uniquely. I have multiple experiences and styles to draw from.

I prefer to teach lessons to age 11 & up but will work with younger students if they are ready.

Vocal students can receive music reading training if they desire it, but since 30 minutes is a minimum for developing physical foundational techniques and music selections, lessons would need to be 45 minutes or an hour to include vocal sight reading.
I love helping students expand their ability, whatever their starting point. Musicality is even more important than a display of difficult music, so I take time to encourage expressiveness.

Our initial session,
I am interested in learning about each student's personal tastes, and any past experiences and goals. Then we will proceed to explore their instrument, whether it is their own voice or the piano.
A student's goals and resources will influence my choices from a wide variety of curriculum that are beneficial for steady progress. I will collaborate with them to choose musical selections, incorporating their goals and tastes.

Enjoying the ability to express oneself through music is of primary importance. While challenging my students to steadily grow in their capability, their appreciation of compositions and ability to communicate them; I also encourage their feedback to assess what works best for them.

I love helping students expand their ability, whatever their starting point. Musicality is even more important than a display of difficult music, so I take time to encourage expressiveness.

Older students need to be able to focus on developing technique and accept the home practice involved to learn ( and in the case of piano "read" ) and expressively sing/ play their selections.

Adult students are self directed and I accept their self pacing for home practice. But where parents are involved, I discuss a practice plan and encourage it. However, a student should never skip a lesson because they didn't practice. We all need a jump start sometimes.

Materials: I will discuss the need for curriculum with students before purchasing items.
Curriculum is chosen based on the students goals. There is a $2 monthly fee for piano students who will benefit from the sequential music games offered online through my teacher account.

Mary is a wonderful teacher. She has a beautiful voice. I wasn't confident in singing before I attended the class. She really helped me build confidence. I love singing with her!

This teacher is wonderful. My son had his very first ever lesson with Mary tonight. He was really nervous but her smiles and enthusiasm (plus her lovely singing voice) helped him feel at ease. He is 9 and I am sure her positive infulence will help shape his voice for a lifetime.

Mary is a great teacher. She genuinely cares about creating a great learning experience. She listens to questions and gives clear answers. She has a natural ability to be un-intimidating and very likable. Mary is both fun and practical in her teaching approach. Mary arranged recitals in different venues allowing her students to show off their newly learned skills. My 16 yr old daughter learned and grew in leaps and bounds with each lesson. Thank you Mary!

My daughter has only had one lesson, but we were both very impressed by what Mary was able to teach her in just 45 minutes. Mary isn't just trying to improve my daughter's voice, but also her expression of emotions when she sings. Mary is obviously very experienced!

I've been taking lessons with Mary for about 2 years now. In that time I've she's helped me improve drasticly in my tone range. Couldn't have come this far without her help. She'll give you a good foundation for your voice to build on and is very informative on ways you can improve.

As an older adult, I started beginning piano with Mary H. and was able to progress quickly and learn how to read music and play the music I was interested in and learned much more than I ever expected about music theory. She is very knowledgeable and is an excellent teacher and also a very pleasant person and gets you in and out on time.

Mary is the kind of person that brings happiness to her surroundings.
I have studied voice with many teachers, but Mary's coaching is the first time that I really understand what I need to improve in my singing practices. Mary’s advice is very accurate and she pinpoints these flaws. Only half a year has passed since I started practicing singing with her; however, I can profess that she is the best teacher I have had so far. I thought my voice was becoming rusty as I aged, but it is a happy surprise that it is improving! I also feel healthier since I started to learn from Mary.
Her voice training is good for anyone who wishes to improve her/his singing technique regardless of the genre of music/songs. I recommend her singing lessons for opera voice training, popular singing from the heart, or hobby singing and body conditioning. Mary's coverage is really wide.

Mary is a very great music instructor, she takes her time with you until you get a hang of what you are practicing with your voice. She is really patient and does not rush you into anything you are not comfortable with yet. Mary is a very good instructor, and I suggest her to others.

Mary taught me piano and vocal lessons for many years. She teaches a variety of different musical styles and makes her students feel confident in themselves as they learn. She teaches in such a way that is easy to absorb and provides children with incentives to encourage them in the process. If you are looking for music lessons that will also enrich your life, Mary is the teacher to go with.
