Christian Gospel has many definitions. Whether relying on belting or more traditional methods - gospel is a great musical form. I have taught many students who are interested in increasing their abilities in a gospel setting. As with my other vocal pedagogy teaching methods I work to free the voice, extend the range, increase dynamics and resonance and improve the overall singing performance. The emotional and inspirational content of the music is reviewed and encouraged. My gospel students have a lot of fun and improve their ability to share their dedication in their various church settings.

About Marty W.

Open up to your own unique voice. Play piano with energy and freedom.

"With singing, your body is your instrument. Helping you become all you can be as a performer is my number one goal. Protecting your voice is a close second as we work to strengthen your vocal range and the quality of your sound. As well, piano students will learn techniques that will speed up their comprehension of sight reading and/or improvisation. Teaching gives me an opportunity to energize my students and share with them historically proven techniques - as well as new ways of practicing and performing." - Marty

Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Marty moved to the Phoenix, AZ area eight years ago. Marty has over 20 years of performing and teaching experience. She studied for three years at the School of Music, University of Colorado, Boulder. She has studied in the Masters program in vocal pedagogy and has performed in a variety of venues from blues to opera.

You will find her pedagogy technique to be respectful of the masters that have come before her. She is also open to new techniques from belting (in popular music), to microphone usage skills. As a student, you will be invited to perform in student recitals. You will be joining a team of dedicated, passionate performers who know the pleasure of performing.

As a beginning and intermediate piano instructor, Marty will guide you in the basics of sight reading. If you prefer, your piano classes will consist primarily of improvisation and chord progressions (you will also learn a little bit of sight reading which will help you 'flesh out' the melody). You will gain a solid foundation in music theory as well as an introduction into the vast world of music history. All age ranges are welcome, from the beginning elementary student, to the retiree just now finding the time to pursue their passion to perform.

I have authored a variety of music theory articles to assist you with your progress. We use these in the lessons to speed up your assimilation of the material. You will receive support via this literature and will quickly recognize how music theory supports your efforts with either singing or playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your voice is unique to you. How you currently sing and what you want to sing will be the foundation from which we work. We will explore your voice and strengthen it via breath and physical exercises and practice with a repertoire that suits your individual tastes. We will also prepare your mind for quick and fluid articulation of your musical sensitivities.

Music theory and various musical explorations will assist you in moving forward in the most rapid manner possible. Whether you are twelve years old or sixty-five, you will find fun as well as perceptive methods for strengthening your passion for musical performance.

Since your body is your instrument, I am very conscious of the need to assist you in waking your body up in order to perform most successfully. The warm-up exercises include not only traditional vocalizes, but also methods for stretching your body and strengthening your diaphragmatic breathing. My students become very aware of any residual tension in their bodies. Singing is a wonderful way to get in touch with - and expel - any way in which you might 'close down' or 'tense down' your physical body. By working with a caring professional, you will learn how to freely share your unique talent with the world.

As we progress through the series of classes, you will use breathing exercises to activate the thoracic (throat & chest) and visceral (stomach) cavities. Your lessons will continue into specific vocalization exercises; such as singing scales, triads and specific exercises to assist you with fluid musical expression. Traditional ear training will also be a part of the lessons for intermediate students.

Many of the lessons I teach include a theme of working on confidence, vocal projection, breath support, finding and releasing tension, vocal range expansion, audition preparation and stage performance. All singing includes a core of story-telling. You will be encouraged to 'deconstruct' a song and discover the story, along with the emotions that are found in the lyrics of the songs you will sing.

In a similar fashion, my piano students will work on exercises to establish kinesthetic learning or muscle-memory. I have a unique method for sharing chord-progressions and piano improvisation. You will learn to quickly share music in a satisfying and pleasing manner that will surprise you and the people who hear your music. From your unique 'ear,' and via your new-found understanding of music theory, music will pour out of your piano.

As a piano student, you will also be exposed to lessons of the masters who have taught for hundreds of years. Sight-reading at the piano is a very enjoyable skill. It is also a foundation from which we will work (while taking in mind your particular interests). Again, whether a pre-teen or a senior citizen (or anyone in between!) who has finally found the time to explore their musical talent - you will find classes uniquely suited to your musical trajectory.

Your lessons will proceed as you acquire the ability to successfully perform your exercises and musical literature. Playing the piano fluidly and sharing your abilities with others is an amazing experience! It is my intent to ensure that your progress is swift, enjoyable and based on the work of the masters who have come before us! See you soon... Cordially, Marty W.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, metronome, microphone and amp. I can provide supplemental piano music; in some cases, students will need to purchase their own music. I also have an area where parents can wait for lessons to end. We also have a market or restaurant close-by as well.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When traveling to student's homes - they need to have a piano. In some cases, students also need to buy their own voice or piano books. In the event that a vocal student prefers in-home lessons and does not have a piano, I can bring an electric piano to the lessons (let's talk!).

*** Specialties ***
Barbara Doscher method of Opera Voice and Singing
Have experience with conducting choral music
Piano - beginner and intermediate sight reading
Piano - chord progression and music theory (some songwriting)

All my three kids have enjoyed piano lessons with Marty. The oldest for more than two years! We are moving out of the country, so unfortunately we have to leave her; I wish we could take her with us! She is such a dedicated teacher. My kids have learned so much from her, not only playing the piano but also music theory. She is also flexible in scheduling, so we could always find a time that worked well for our busy family schedule. We will miss her!

Marty helped me to prepare to sing at my wedding and although that didn't ultimately happen because I was so busy with all the wedding details I did not have time to practice, the experience was magficent and I've taken what I learn with her an facilated into many avenues of my life including speaking, as she taught me how to better project and be more confident in doing so.
She takes a very personal approach with her students to help them truly recognize there goals.

Marty is a wonderful teacher and very easy to understand. I tried many online packages and other teachers and I could not keep up with their instruction. Marty is clear and has figured out ways to make It possible for me to play much faster than I ever thought I could. I will be returning from a trip east and will continue my lessons when I return. I am very happy that I found Marty.

Having Marty as a piano teacher has been amazing. I’m 3 lessons in and I’m very surprised at how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time with Marty’s guidance. Marty does not have a set curriculum that you must follow. Instead, she forms the lessons around the student and their needs. Marty is so great at interpreting where you are, the pace you need to go, and the best practices that will fit your personality/habits. She provides assignments that will keep you busy throughout the week as you practice. I’ve never felt like I’ve been pushed too hard either. Marty gives assignments that will not be too overwhelming, but at the same time, they are ones that are very fun because you see the improvement in your playing. To be able to find this balance shows the sign of a great teacher in my eyes. Only 3 lessons in, and yet I felt compelled to write this review in such a short amount of time. Thank you Marty!

My son has been working with Mrs Marty for a month now and he has shown exceptional growth. He is a high functioning autistic boy who can be non verbal and jittery at time. Marty is patient with him and when they play the piano together it has become an outlet of expression for my son. I do not play and so I am so grateful to Marty for all the hard work she puts in to help my son find an avenue of expression. She puts together personalized binders that my son loves to have to sit at practice his “homework” lesson Marty gave him for the week. The binder has served as a wonderful point of reference for not only my son but for me to understand basic piano techniques so that I may also help my son and understand what he is learning. We would recommend Marty to anyone who has an interest in learning piano!

We scheduled online for a particular day and time that was available on her schedule, yet every single class day I received multiple texts requesting for us to reschedule and then reschedule the rescheduled times. The last class time she texted to cancel very close to the class time.
Our first lesson we sat and waited for her to assemble a lesson notebook that she charged us $15 for. She had to print papers and her computer / printer wasn't working very well. I would think this would have been prepared before hand, not during the lesson time. $15 for what we received is pretty steep.
She committed to sending exercises after the lessons a couple of times that were not sent for several days. She had forgotten and was out of town once and would not be returning for several days.
I felt there was a lack of preparedness and professionalism and respect for our time.

Not only was she able to help keep our son with ADHD interested and engaged, showing him how to create impromptu jazz music, my husband also saw her to discuss classical music theory. I have been taking lessons from Marty for about 4 months. I was looking for someone that could come to my house. I had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke about 18 months ago and needed someone special. Marty is definitely that person. She is kind, patient and understands my disability. I took lessons as a child and come from a musical family and she has restored confidence in my ability to play the piano. My hand/brain coordination has improved greatly. She has incorporated some music theory techniques that really work for me. I am very lucky to have found Marty.

I'm a student at ASU's School of Music and wanted to get extra help with singing, since it is not my primary instrument. I've been studying music for 14 years playing the piano, violin, and guitar. Marty is very knowledgeable and has helped me so much with not only my voice, but I've also been able to use what she's taught me to help me with my other instruments and classes. She has helped me in areas none of my other teachers have really touched, such as improvisation and accompaniment, and she explains things very thoroughly and with good examples. She is very dedicated and cares deeply about her students. I highly recommend Marty!

Miss Marty has very kind and sympathetic personality. But her piano skill is not so good, she doesnt know any technic information about piano playing and interpretation. Of course she is not a pianist, but singer. For piano education, children needs a real piano teacher. Maybe thats why, she is checking her facebook account during the lesson, or eating something, or doing something else... because she doesnt have so much to say about piano playing. Most of the lessons she came late to her home and we were waiting front of her house, but sometimes she did not do the lesson in exact minute. And after 3 months my son is still in same grade, where he begun. I know he is talented, because i’m a musician too. If you want a professional piano lesson, then i suggest to find a real pianist, not a singer, who can not play and teach piano.

I went to Marty for voice lessons, initially - I had never taken any before, and I wanted to grow in improving my singing voice. I did have about 10 years of instruction in classical piano before my 20's, however, and after a number of voice lessons with Marty, I asked if she would also help me learn more improvisation on the piano (which is something I had only learned a little of in my years of piano lessons). It was a real treat to get to a place where I could both play and sing at the same time with her help - and comfortably! She was so fun to work with, and I really appreciate her perspective on music, and her clear enjoyment of it. Marty helped rekindle a love for music in me that had been pushed aside for awhile, in the midst of my life as a busy mom. To top it off, I found out near the end of our season of lessons together that she is also an excellent calligrapher, and that she offered lessons for that too - which is something else I wanted to learn. She helped get me started with that as well. I would recommend Marty to a friend for any of these three categories of lessons. She is knowledgeable, inspiring, and a lot of fun to learn from! I look forward to taking from her again in the future.

Marty has a true heart for music! She really cares about the success of her students. The only reason I didn't give her 5 stars is because I had a long-time instructor previously who was out of this world, so I couldn't select "Best Instructor ever" as that would do him a disservice. You know all those qualities that make a teacher truly great?

Well, this amazing lady has them in spades!

Marty is equally patient, motivated, and inspiring

I've been taking lessons for a month & a half, and from the start, it's been exciting and challenging and not boring in the least. The level of encouragement and support she provides is phenomenal. I've felt energized after each class, and I know that I've made a lot of progress in just the short time since I started.

I recommend her classes to anyone who wishes to sing, even to people who think they are hopeless cases. I was desperate for a teacher like her because I couldn't sing along to easy pop tunes without wincing and subsiding into horrified silence. And that was when no one else was in earshot.

With Marty's guidance, I've gotten over my fears, and when I listen to music now, I'll sometimes join in with the chorus, and hey! it doesn't sound too bad (if I say so myself). There are times I'll even burst into a singing conversation with my roommate, just like a proper musical!

Marty, thank you for all your help. I rarely write reviews, but you deserve an excellent one.

My two children absolutely loves taking piano lessons from Ms. Marty. In the past, both of them dreaded piano lessons and anything that had to do with piano. Once we found Ms. Marty, the kids have a new attitude towards learning and practicing. My daughter even asks to practice everyday! Ms. Marty has her own unique way of teaching the material so that kids can understand. I also like how she blends the traditional methods of teaching piano with the new 'tech' world we live in. She knows where to look for material and websites online that will help children with their music learning.

I just wanted to take a moment to write a short note of praise for voice instructor Marty Wilson.

Marty took me under her wing for a crash course audition preparation, with just one week to prepare! Marty was the perfect instructor for this task... She provided coaching on stage presence, proper mic usage, non-vocal communication, and stress management, that I would have been completely lost without. She kept me focused on the task at hand, and was extremely insightful in feedback and instruction. She even took the time to email me some helpful video and instruction links to supplement our lessons that further prepared me for my audition.

I would highly recommend Marty for anyone seeking a vocal coach.

Had a good time on the first two lessons. However, I just happen to run into a colleague this week that plays piano at gigs and likes to jam. We had good fit on the first jam session and plan to jam on a regular basis. This is the reason I will no longer have a need for lessons. Thanks, Mike

Jaidan's Piano Lessons

I would like to say that Miss Marty is an amazing and caring piano teacher who has done an exceptional job with my son Jaidan. He is learning so much from her!! I was also touched with the care she took in putting the children's recital together. It was well organized and she had such a talented group of children who peformed songs to piano pieces. It was an excellent learning experience for me and my son! She also did a magnificent job with the program announcement in which she added a personal touch by asking parents to send in pictures of their children and a personal message to our child which she put on the program. It was one of those things I will keep forever as a memoir!! Thanks Miss Marty for being so wonderful!!!!

My daughter has really enjoyed Marty and her teaching style. The progress they are making is very impressive. Marty is professional and enthusiastic about her students and her job. We are strongly considering having our 2nd daughter enrolled with Marty due to her passion and ability to reach her students.

She's Wonderful

Marty really grasps the strengths and weaknesses of her students and creates a careful lesson plan attuned to his/her needs. She's an encouraging teacher who makes my love of music grow with each lesson.

Excellent Vocal Coach!

Marty is an amazing teacher. She helped me to greatly improve my singing in only 5 lessons! She is a very encouraging and talented instructor. I really enjoyed taking lessons from her.

We brought out 6 yr old to Marty as she is very interested in piano and singing. Our daughter is very active and Marty had her focused and began at her level with great goals. She respected our daughter, addressed her at her level of understanding and in return expected respect and offered encouragement and set expectations of our daughter as a student. I would hight recommend anyone looking for this type of instruction to consider Marty. She is extremely educated in this field and understands much more than just the "how to" of music.
