English (ESL) with Martin A.

There are many different challenges when it comes to learning English as a second language. For example, the word order may be different from your first language, the spelling rules are challenging to learn, and fast-paced natural conversations can sound confusing compared to careful speech. No matter where you are in your ESL education, we can work on identifying your areas for improvement and create achievable milestones to help you achieve your desired proficiency. For our first lesson, we will create a needs assessment to determine what your end goals may be. Do you want to improve your writing skills? Your intelligibility? Increase your comprehension of spoken English? Achieve a more native-like accent? Work on your fluency? While each of these goals are connected, they have their own ways of being achieved and different steps to get there. We will create a lesson plan together to get the most out of our time and achieve more in the real world. I am a Linguistics student at ISU, learning the intricacies of not only the English language but of languages around the world. With the broader perspective that studying other languages brings, I hope to enable my students to transfer their existing linguistic knowledge to English. Many concepts exist across languages, such as nouns, adjectives, and verbs. The same can also be said for sounds, such as certain vowels and consonants. Building a connection from the first language to English establishes a foundation to build from.
