Piano lessons for beginners: learn the basics and keep progressing!

I love learning new instruments, and I hope to get you excited about it too! As a first-self-taught and then-formally-trained person, I understand both points of view when teaching and learning music. I believe theory and technique are important, but the joy of playing a variety of pieces is essential too. What can you expect from lessons? We will start by learning the basics of music theory (this will depend on your music background and how familiar you are with the topic), how to properly sit and position your hands on the piano, and locating and playing your first notes. We will look at a new piece every class, so that we keep things interesting and move forward in our studies. I believe that the most important thing when playing any instrument is to communicate and have something to say. One can play notes perfectly without saying much, and I want to share with you how you can express yourself through music. This is a big part of performing, and I also think it adds meaning to our practice. In terms of books and resources, I like using the Suzuki Piano method, the John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano, and Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Piano Course books.

Hi! I am Marina, and I have been involved in music since I was a kid. I started in choir, and as I grew up, so did my interest in learning musical instruments. Piano was the first instrument I took lessons in, and then I started wanting to learn other instruments. At the age of 15, I was very proud to use my pocket money to buy myself a violin. I spent the next year trying to prove to myself I could learn even if I didn't have the means to take formal lessons. After this, I added guitar, ukelele, cello and viola to my collection, and I have been playing ever since! I am 27 now, and I have played instruments and sang in orchestras and ensembles during my college years, and have been part of vocal ensembles outside of school. Playing music is something that brings me a lot of peace and joy, and I believe everyone has the potential to learn, regardless of their age. I look forward to playing music with you :)
